The Milwaukee Bucks were formed
The Milwaukee Bucks were formed in 1968 and experienced
almost immediate success. After drafting Lew Alcindor (later Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar) out of UCLA with the first pick overall in 1969, the Bucks became
an immediately competitive team. In only their second season they won 56
games and made the playoffs. Oscar Robertson was added before the beginning of
the 1970-71 season and proved to be the needed piece for the Bucks to take the
next step. In their third season they won 66 games and the NBA Finals, defeating
a formidable Baltimore Bullets team led by Earl Monroe, Jack Marin, Gus Johnson
and Wes Unseld.
Following the Bucks' loss in the 1974 Finals to the Boston
Celtics of John Havlicek, Jo Jo White and Dave Cowens, Oscar Robertson retired.
The following 1974-75 season proved to be a disappointment as the Bucks missed
the playoffs. Another blow came when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar then departed to join
the Los Angeles Lakers.
After some inconsistent seasons, the Bucks began appearing
regularly in the postseason starting in 1980. In the 13 seasons between 1980 and
1991, the Bucks made the playoffs every year. During this time they reached the
Eastern Conference Finals three times. In 1983, led by Marques Johnson and
Sidney Moncrief, they made it to the Eastern Conference Finals only to fall in 5 games to the remarkable
65 win Philadelphia 76ers of Moses Malone, Andrew Toney and Julius Erving. 1984
saw the Bucks lose in 5 games to eventual champions the Boston Celtics. The
Bucks made one more trip to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1986, where they
lost to the Boston Celtics in 4 games.
Following the 1991 season, the Bucks went 7 seasons without a
playoff appearance until 1999. The Bucks then made the playoffs for three years
straight from 1999-2001, including a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals where
they lost to Allen Iverson and the 76ers in 7 games.
