Gunnar Aagaard Andersen was an important Danish artist who
worked in sculpture, painting and interior design. He was also an exponent of
aesthetic theories through his writings. After his studies throughout the 1930s
and 1940s, Andersen embarked an acclaimed career, including co-founding the
Groupe Espace. His work helped promote the Concrete art aesthetic.
As a pioneer, it is no surprise that Andersen eventually
followed in the footsteps of so many great artists of the 20th century and tried
his hand at textile design. The result was Letters, a bold, mischievous design
of partial letters over vividly colored backgrounds.
One of the fabrics made with this design is Letters: Cobalt.
This Gunnar Aagard Andersen design was made in 1955. The design consists of
partially shown black letters over a cobalt background. This fabric has an 80%
wool, 20% nylon face, and a 100% cotton back. See the rest of our Mid-Century Designer Fabrics. Also see our Retro Upholstery Fabric section.
Aagaard Andersen's Letters: Cobalt fabric has so many
possibilities... draperies, wall hangings, seat cushions, pillows, lampshades,
slipcovers and table covers are just a few of the items that can be made from
this designer fabric.
