The University of Utah Utes are one of the premier athletics programs in the Mountain West Conference. The history of the Utah Utes' sports teams includes particular successes in basketball, football and women's gymnastics.

The football program was established in 1892 and is a proud representative of the University's athletics tradition. The Utah Utes have a record of 9-3 in bowl games and have won 23 conference championships. Over half of Utah's conference championships came during the tenure of Ike Armstrong. From 1925 to 1949, the Utes compiled a record of 141-55-15 under his direction. He is enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Recent highlights include a 2004 season in which the team went 12-0 and became the first non-BCS conference team to play in a BCS bowl game. That season also saw the team's quarterback, Alex Smith, picked first overall in the NFL Draft.

After the 2004 season, the Utes earned the distinction of having two players taken as #1 overall draft picks in the same year; in addition to Smith, Andrew Bogut of the basketball squad was picked #1 in the NBA Draft. This was the first time any university had achieved such a feat.
