The Illinois Fighting Lillini play in one of the great old
athletic conferences: the Big Ten. Some of the University's greatest athletic
successes have come in baseball, basketball and football.
In baseball, the Fighting Illini have established themselves
as one of the perennial Big Ten powerhouses, having won 28 conference
championships: 1900, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1910, 1911, 1914, 1915, 1916,
1921, 1922, 1927, 1931, 1934, 1937, 1940, 1947, 1948, 1952, 1953, 1962, 1963,
1989, 1990, 1998, 2005.
The men's basketball team has won two national championships:
one in 1915 and again in 1935. Additionally, Illinois has appeared in five Final
Fours: 1949, 1951, 1952, 1989 and 2005. Also, Illinois has been crowned Big Ten
regular season champions 17 times: 1915, 1917, 1924, 1935, 1937, 1942, 1943,
1949, 1951, 1952, 1963, 1984, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005. The Illini won Big
Ten Tournament championships in 2003 and 2005.
In football, the Fighting Illini were one of the best
programs earlier in the 20th century. They were voted national champions in
1914, 1919, 1923, 1927 and 1951. They were Big Ten champions in 1910, 1914,
1915, 1918, 1919, 1923, 1927, 1928, 1946, 1951, 1953, 1963, 1983, 1990 and 2001.
The men's gymnastics, track and field, and tennis teams have
also won national championships.
