The University of Mississippi Rebels began playing football
in 1893 and over time have established themselves as one of the grand old
programs of the deep south. In its 110+ year history, Ole Miss has amassed three
national championships and six SEC titles. Additionally, the Rebels have
produced over 40 first team All Americans and over 200 professional football
players.
The Rebels' greatest seasons came during the 24 year tenure
of John Vaught. From 1947 to 1970, Mississippi became of the elite football
programs in the nation, despite playing in the same conference as traditional
powerhouses Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. The 1959 Mississippi squad was voted
SEC team of the decade. Under Vaught's guidance, Ole Miss played in a
then-record 15 consecutive bowl games from 1957-1971.
