The University of Alabama is home to the legendary Crimson
Tide football team. The Crimson Tide dominated the SEC and NCAA football for
decades.
The University of Alabama started playing football in 1892
and since then has won 21 SEC titles, and has been awarded 12 national
championships in major polls.
Some of the finest seasons for Alabama football came during
the 25 year tenure of Bear Bryant. Between 1958 and 1982, Bryant led the Crimson
Tide to six national championships in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978 and 1979.

In addition to these 12 recognized championships, the
Official NCAA Football records book recognizes Alabama as producing national
champions 1945, 1962, 1966, 1975 and 1977. The Crimson Tide in these years was
coached by Bear Bryant.
