The Arizona Wildcats have one of the elite athletic programs
in the nation. The Wildcats have been particularly successful with their
baseball and basketball programs.
The Arizona Wildcats have developed one of the most prominent
basketball programs in the nation under the guidance of coach Lute Olson. Since
his hiring in 1983, the Wildcats have made the Final Four in 1988, 1994, 1997
and 2001. Two of their Final Four appearances led to the National Championship
Game. In 1997 they defeated the defending champion Kentucky Wildcats 84-79. In
2001, the Wildcats lost to the Duke Blue Devils.
The Wildcats also field a notable baseball program. The
baseball program has been playing since 1904 and has captured three national
championships: 1976, 1980 and 1986. The Wildcats also played for the national
championship in 1956, 1959 and 1963.
Arizona's women's softball team is among the nation's best as
they have won eight Softball College World Series Titles: 1991, 1993, 1994,
1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007. The Wildcats are second only to UCLA in College
World Series appearances. The Wildcats also made trips to the World Series in
1992, 1995, 1998 and 2002.
The Arizona Wildcats have also experienced success in NCAA
football and golf.
