The University of Auburn is one of the powerhouse programs in
SEC athletics. Auburn fields 18 varsity teams in 13 sports.
The Tigers are also part of one of the oldest continuous
rivalries in the NCAA with the Georgia Bulldogs. They first met in 1892 and have
played a total of 106 times since then. Auburn leads the series with a 52-48-8
record.
Auburn also participates in one of the fiercest rivalries in
college football with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Although the first game played
between these two schools was in 1893, the rivalry really got going in 1948
when, for the first time since 1906 the two schools played each other. Alabama
won the 1948 edition 55-0, but ever since the series has been much more
competitive. The record stands with Alabama having won 38 times, while Auburn
has won 32. Today, the Iron Bowl, as it is known, is one of the most highly
anticipated college football games of the year.
Auburn has also won 6 SEC Conference Championships in
football. In addition, the Auburn Tigers have been voted national champions 8
times by various organizations. These years are:
