The University of Connecticut Huskies are one of the
traditional powers in men's and women's basketball, and are now establishing a
more prominent presence in football. UConn has also been particularly successful
in men's and women's hockey and field hockey.
The men's basketball team has established a reputation as one
of the most formidable in the nation. Under coach Jim Calhoun, the Huskies have
won two national championships (1999 and 2004), and many of its players have
gone on to success in the NBA. Since Calhoun took over as coach in 1986, the
Huskies have been a dominant force in the Big East Conference, winning 10
regular season conference titles and 6 Big East Tournament championships.

Uconn has one of the most dominant women's basketball
programs in the nation. Coach Geno Auriemma has helped establish the Huskies as
one of the game's most feared opponents. The Huskies have been to 8 Final Fours
and have won 5 national championships. In addition, Uconn has won the Big East
regular season title 14 times, and the conference tournament championship 13
times. The Huskies have also produced 6 National Players of the Year.

The men's and women's soccer teams have maintained a national
presence for many years. The men's program has won 3 national championships to
date (1948, 1981, 2000), while the women's program has made the national title
game four times (1984, 1990, 1997, 2003), although they have never won.
