The University of Washington is one of the traditional
football powers in the NCAA. Over the years, the football program has
accumulated an enviable history of success including national championships in
1960 and 1991 and eight Rose Bowl victories.
One of the football programs greatest achievements is 63 game
unbeaten streak that started in 1907 and ended in 1917. The Huskies of these
years were coached by Gil Dobie, who compiled a record of 58-0-3 during his time
at the University.
Over the years, the Huskies have enjoyed a number of
remarkable seasons; among these are the two national championship seasons of
1960 and 1991. The 1960 season saw the the Huskies drop an early game to Navy.
Afterwards they rolled of eight straight victories including a 17-7 defeat of #1
ranked Minnesota. An interesting point about this season is that the two major
polls (AP and UPI) voted Minnesota as national champions because their polls
were conducted before the bowl games. The Helms Foundation awarded their
national championship to the Huskies after the victory over Minnesota.
In 1991, the Huskies went undefeated during the regular
season and won the Rose Bowl in dominating fashion over Michigan 34-14. The game
was a clash of award winners: Michigan had Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard,
while Washington had Lombardi and Outland Trophy winner Steve Emtman. The
Huskies finished the season 12-0, their last undefeated season to date.
The coach of the last Huskies national championship team was
Don James. During his tenure, Washington compiled a 153-57-2 record including
six conference championships and 15 bowl appearances. The Huskies also won 22
consecutive games between 1990 and 1992 while he was coach. In 1997 he was
inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
The Washington Huskies have a long standing in-state football
rivalry with Washington State that has been played since 1900. The Apple Cup -
as the annual game is known - has been played over 100 times, with Washington
leading the series 64-30-6.

The University of Washington is also for its men's and

international attention by winning the gold medal at the 1936 Olympics held in
Berlin. They added to their legend by defeating the world champion Leningrad
