From Cinderellas to Goliath slayers to basketball power,
Gonzaga's ascent has been swift. After making a Cinderella run through the 1998
NCAA Tournament, the Bulldogs lost by five points to eventual champions the
UConn Huskies in the Elite Eight. The following years, the Zags hired Mark Few
as head coach and under his guidance have become a more prominent national
presence, often appearing in the Top 25 of the national polls.
In each of his first two seasons at the helm, Few led Gonzaga
to the Sweet 16. Gonzaga also made the Sweet 16 in the 2005-06 season. Between
2001 and 2006, Mark Few was named WCC coach of the year every season. In his
eight full seasons as coach of the team, Gonzaga has won seven conference titles
and made the NCAA Tournamnet each year.
Gonzaga in the past few years has produced a number of
nationally recognized players. Foremost among these are NBA Hall of Famer John
Stockton, and 2006 Co-National Player of the Year Adam Morrison.
