The Michigan State Spartans are one of only sixteen universities to have won multiple national titles in football, and were the first university to win a national championship in both football and basketball.
Football began as a club sport at Michigan State in the late 1800's, and by 1896 had gained varsity status. Over the course of its history, MSU has won three recognized national championships and eight conference titles. Among the Spartans' football rivals are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Michigan Wolverines.
The Michigan State Spartans basketball program has also been very successful. Its two national titles were won in 1979 and 2000. The 1979 team was led by Magic Johnson to a 75-64 victory over Larry Bird and the Indiana State Sycamores. In 2000, Morris Peterson led the Spartans to an 89-76 victory over the Florida Gators. In addition, the Spartans have won 10 Big Ten championships.
