Rutgers
University was chartered in 1766 as Queen's College and is one of only
two colonial colleges to become public universities (along with William
and Mary). Rutgers enjoys the status of being a premier university
within the United States.
Athletics at Rutgers University have a long and successful history
dating back to the 19th century. Although not often though of as a
sports powerhouse, Rutgers has produced a number of notable
professional athletes who have excelled in a variety of sports. Rutgers
notably participated in the first intercollegiate football game in
1869, a 6 to 4 win against Princeton.
After spending decades unaffiliated with any sports conference, Rutgers
became a member of the Big East conference in 1991. Football and
women's basketball are currently the most prominent programs at
Rutgers. The football program has excelled under head coach Greg
Schiano and the women's basketball program has become one of the
nation's elite under C. Vivian Stringer.
