|In the tradition rich basketball of the Atlantic Coast
Conference, the North Carolina State Wolfpack have long been one of the standard
bearers of the Conference's excellence.
Much of NC State's rich basketball tradition can be traced
back to Everett Case. In his 18 years on the bench, coach Case compiled 377-134
record. Under his guidance, NC State won 9 straight conference tournament
championships between 1947 and 1956.
After Case's retirement, the Wolfpack were guided by Press
Maravich for two seasons. Following his departure, NC State's next great coach
was found in Norm Sloan. He took the reins in to begin the 1967-68 season and
led the Wolfpack to three ACC Tournament Championships and the 1974 NCAA
After Sloan's departure, North Carolina State hired Jim
Valvano as coach. During his tenure, Valvano led the Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA
National Championship, and ACC Tournament Championships in 1983 and 1987.
North Carolina State's football tradition is not quite as
rich, but the Wolfpack have still appeared in 23 bowl games as of 2007. NC State
has also won 7 ACC Championships: 1957, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1973 and 1979.
