|Despite playing in the major Big 12 Conference, the Texas
Tech Red Raiders have established a distinguished athletics program,
particularly football and men's and women's basketball.
Under the guidance of current coach Mike Leach, the Red
Raiders have become known for fielding a high scoring offense that ride on the
arms of prolific quarterbacks. Since Leach's tenure began in 2000, Texas Tech
has had a winning season every year - this despite playing in one of the most
competitive football conferences in the nation. The Red Raiders have also been
to a bowl game in every one of his eight seasons at the helm. As of 2007, the
Red Raiders have recorded 12 straight winning seasons, trailing only Florida
State, Michigan, Florida and Virginia Tech. Texas Tech has also appeared in 31
bowl games throught the school's history.
The Texas Tech Lady Raiders have been, perhaps, the most
successful sports team from the University. In 1993, the Lady Raiders won the
national championship led by star player Cheryl Swoopes and coach Martha Sharp.
In men's basketball, the Red Raiders have made to date 14
postseason appearances, advancing as far as the Sweet 16 three times. They are
currently led by coaching legend Bob Knight.
