|The University of Iowa Hawkeyes participate in 24 sports, 11
for men and 13 for women. The Hawkeyes joined the Big Ten in 1900 and have
become one of its most prominent members since then, especially in football.
The Hawkeyes greatest period of football success came during
the tenure of Forest Evashevski, the team's coach from 1952 to 1960. During his
time with the team, the Hawkeyes won three Big Ten titles, two Rose Bowls and
finished in the top ten of the Associated Press poll five times. In 1958, the
Hawkeyes were voted national champions and received the Grantland Rice Award.
The Hawkeyes' conference championships (bold denotes an
outright title): 1896, 1900, 1921, 1922, 1956, 1958,
1960, 1981, 1985, 1990, 2002, 2004.

In basketball, the Hawkeyes have also had some notable seasons. They have won
eight Big Ten regular season titles and two Big Ten Tournament titles. The
