The design of the South Carolina Gamecocks Fleece: Allover is composed of the University's logos, the Cocky the Rooster mascot, football helmets and basketballs swishing through nets over a brick red background.
Located in the midlands region of South Carolina, the
University of South Carolina has become established as a premier athletics
institution. Overall, South Carolina has won 6 national team championships:
women's track and field in 2002, women's NCAA equestrian in 2005 and 2007, and
the 2005 to 2007 Hunt Seat National Championship women's equestrian. In
addition, the men's and women's track and field programs have produced many
individual national champions.
The Gamecocks' have enjoyed success in men's basketball and
football as well. The basketball team won the 2005 and 2006 NIT championships.
Coaching legend Frank McGuire led the school from 1964 to 1980, and in the
process became only the second coach in NCAA history to lead three different
universities to the NCAA Tournament. He had previously coached St. John's and
North Carolina to the Tournament.
The football program also has its share of tradition,
especially with regards to rivalries. South Carolina has traditional rivalries
with Clemson, Tennessee and Georgia. The rivalry with Clemson is particularly
important, as it is the third longest uninterrupted series in the NCAA, and
longest uninterrupted series in the South. The two universities first played
each other in 1896 and have played every year since 1909. Clemson currently
leads the series 64-37-4, with over 40 of the games having been decided by a
touchdown or less.
