Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals were founded in 1969 as an expansion team in the American League. Before the next decade was over the Royals had become established as one of the premier franchises in the AL, winning three straight division championships from 1976 to 1978. Each time, however, the Royals fell to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series.

After the 1979 season the Royals hired a new manager in Jim Frey. Under Frey, the Royals finally defeated the Yankees in the ALCS, but lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in six games in the World Series.

In 1984, the Tigers returned to the American League Championship Series, but were swept by the eventual Worl Series champion Detroit Tigers in four games.

1985 turned out to be a special season for the Royals. In addition to winning their division, the Royals had a strong pitching rotation which included that year's Cy Young Award winner Brett Saberhagen. The playoffs saw the Royals overcoming desperate deficits to win series after series on their way to the World Series. Facing the St. Louis Cardinals, the Royals rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win the series 4 games to 3.

Kansas City closed out the 1980s as a consistently good, if unspectacular, team. This same time witnessed the decline of the Royals' most identifiable player: George Brett. Over the next few seasons, the Royals' premier players continued to depart the team. Thus, the Royals started a steep decline which has continued since the mid-1990s.

World Series Appearances:
  • 1980: Lost 4-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies
  • 1983: Won 4-3 over the St. Louis Cardinals
Hall of Famers:
  • George Brett, 3rd Base (1973-1993)
  • Orlando Cepeda, 1st Base/Designated Hitter (1974)
  • Harmon Killebrew, 1st Base (1975)
  • Gaylord Perry, pitcher (1983)
  • Bob Lemon, manager (1970-1972)
The design of the Kansas City Royals MLB Fleece: Squares consists of the team's logos within French blue and royal blue squares. The design also includes squares in old gold.
