City Royals were founded in 1969 as an expansion team in the American
League. Before the next decade was over the Royals had become
established as one of the premier franchises in the AL, winning three
straight division championships from 1976 to 1978. Each time, however,
the Royals fell to the New York Yankees in the American League
After the 1979 season the Royals hired a new manager in Jim Frey. Under
Frey, the Royals finally defeated the Yankees in the ALCS, but lost to
the Philadelphia Phillies in six games in the World Series.
