PhiladelphiaPhillies
The Philadelphia Phillies were founded in 1883 as the "Quakers". In time the name was changed to "Philadelphias", followed by a shortening to "Phillies". During these years the Phillies had a number of outstanding players including Sam Thompson, Billy Hamilton and Ed Delahanty.

One of the Phillies' most important early successes was it 1915 pennant win. The Phillies rode the arms of pitchers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Eppa Rixey to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox won the series 4 games to 1.

After the World Series appearance, the Phillies experienced one of the worst periods in the franchise's history. Despite counting with stars such as Chuck Klein - winner of the 1933 MVP and 1934 Triple Crown - the Phillies would produce only one winning season between 1918 and 1948.

By the end of the 1940s, however, the Phillies had acquired two of their future stars: Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn. Together with other key players, Roberts and Ashburn led the Phillies to the pennant in 1950. The Whiz Kids lost in the World Series to the New York Yankees in four games. That would be the Phillies' last World Series appearance until 1980.

The Phillies' next great teams were assembled in the late 1970s with stars such as Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Garry Maddox, Pete Rose, Greg Luzinski, Larry Bowa and Tug McGraw. Together they propelled the Phillies back into the World Series in 1980. The Phillies defeated the Kansas City Royals in six games for the team's first ever World Series victory.

The Phillies returned to the World Series twice after that, in 1983 and 1993. In 1983 the team lost to the Baltimore Orioles in five games. In 1993 the Phillies lost the World Series in Game 6 on Joe Carter's walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning.

World Series Appearances:
1915: Lost 4-1 to the Boston Red Sox
1950: Lost 4-0 to the New York Yankees
1980: Won 4-2 over the Kansas City Royals
1983: Lost 4-1 to the Baltimore Orioles
