Ask Netfah: Can I Substitute Wool for Gabardine?

Dear Netfah,

My daughter is working on a sewing project in school and her pattern requires her to use 4 yards of a gabardine fabric. But what I want to know, is if a wool or wool blend would do? I have several yards left over from a previous project and it seems like a good substitute.

Janet, Pennsauken-NJ

Janet,

Your wool fabric would serve as a good substitute for your pattern. Much like gabardine which carries a slight ribbing on one side and in some cases when mixed with other fibers, a slight shine on the opposite; the weave in wool fabric is similar in performance. Both are often used by designers and seamstresses for suits, trousers, skirts and matching jackets. Since gabardine is traditionally made with worsted wool, both materials should be dry cleaned to avoid shrinkage. Make note though that gabardine is also available in polyester blends as well, allowing for ease in laundering and fabric care. Check out some of our wool blend fabric links below for a great selection of wools for the winter months ahead.
