THE FABULOUS FABRICS OF LIFE

Since I was able to spell my name, I have been drawing. I would sketch for hours, just disappearing into myself. Consumed by the look and feel of fabric, I would sketch images of women in clothing of my designs, right down to the microscopic details of their trim. From the recesses of my imagination, would come creations inspired by the world around me. I would absorb beauty from the swaying trees and the still flowers. I would soak in ideas from the sun and the rain. The simplicity and perfection of my ideal perspective uplifted and inspired me over and over again till I had created my own little world of splendor around me. Fire, water, earth, air and most of all LOVE, were the elemental canvas from which I drew upon and nurtured into each piece of art that would become the portfolio of my intimate relationship with fabric, fashion and mother earth.

Today, as I look around at all the various bolts of material that surround me here in between the walls of J&O, I am touched by the unique characteristics that each textile possesses. From the raw and rough texture of burlap, to the soft and sensuous feel of suede cloth, these beautiful fabrics are symbolic reflections of life itself. To look upon the pictorial scene of a seashore tapestry or follow the intricate embroidery of a silk brocade and not appreciate the creative imagination at work is almost a sin.

So I will gladly take these inspirations and shape them into the masterpieces of my own making for all the world to see. I will express the uniqueness that is me, and smile quietly at my expressions made manifest for they are simply reflections of the most High herself. And I will graciously invite you to do the same.

From 'Railroad' to 'Repeat'. The Real Way to Figure out How Many Yards of Fabric You Need.

For most professionals who have been in the fabric and upholstery business for a number of years, the terms ‘railroaded’ and ‘repeat’ are as common as a materials’ ‘look’ and ‘feel’. But for the novice, these words can have us frantically searching our fabric dictionaries and web resources looking for a quick description that could save our pockets from unnecessary spending and the purchase of excess yardage.

The term ‘railroaded’ is in reference to the layout of a fabric on a piece of furniture in relation to the way it is woven at the fabric mill. It also refers to the direction of the pattern or the nap of the fabric. All fabric is either railroaded or not railroaded if it has a nap or pattern. Normally the pattern or nap on the fabric goes from side to side of the roll rather than up it. This allows you to upholster a sofa or piece of furniture in one piece instead of risking the prospect of creating a seam along the span. Sometimes it is more efficient to cut fabric that is railroaded even if you don’t have a large span because the pattern may be difficult to match. Design and repeat will have to be considered as well.

With most solids and velors you don’t have to worry about whether or not it is railroaded because they don’t have a pattern or print. With geometrics and retro’s you can have it situated regular or railroaded. With stripes, if you want to create consistency and balance, special attention needs to be paid to the direction they are going in. When stripes have different widths, they are considered to be either balanced or unbalanced. A balanced stripe is a stripe with the same type of stripe on each side. If you cut the fabric across the stripe, it would line up with the other end. An unbalanced stripe is a stripe that does not have the same stripe on each side. When cutting across this kind of stripe, the only way it will line up is if it is put back at the point at which it was cut. When working with chenille’s and velvets, you will find that a lot of them already come railroaded, making it easier for upholstery projects.

Another very important term to learn and understand is the ‘repeat’ of a fabric. The fabric repeat refers to the distance between one image or pattern and its repeated image or pattern. Most prints carry a vertical and horizontal repeat, but it is the vertical repeat that is most consistent across the length of the fabric. For this reason, it is the most important measurement when planning an upholstery, window treatment, or garment project. Repeats usually come in increments of 3” (3”, 6”, 9”, 12” etc). For smaller projects like ties and children’s clothing, a smaller repeat is recommended so that the images can be seen in full. Larger repeats are best suited for larger upholstery and bedding projects.

Having a basic understanding of these two common fabrication terms will save you a lot of time, money and aggravation on your next shopping trip. And in case this article was a little too long winded for you, here are two easy tips that will help you remember each one.

RAILROADED= print stands UPRIGHT across LENGTH of fabric like on SOFAS

NON-RAILROADED= print stands UPRIGHT across WIDTH of fabric like on DRAPES

VERTICAL repeat = runs LENGTH of fabric

HORIZONTAL repeat = runs from SALVAGE to SALVAGE

Pimp Your Ride with J&O Fabric Store!

For many of us, our cars are not only our modes of transportation, they are also our ‘babies’ our ‘tried & true’s’, and our ‘can’t do with outs’. So it’s no surprise when we get calls from customers interested in doing customed reupholstering on their Hummers, Beamers, Cady’s and even RV’s. From sunburst yellow vinyl’s to pretty in pink faux furs, the creative juices behind the showcased vehicles is something of an inspiration for interior designers and auto trim professionals alike.

So in ode to the 70 year old Detroit Sugar Daddy rollin’ in his 69’ Cadillac Eldorado, and the 25 year old California surfer turned detailer who has a fancy for convertibles of every make and model, we listed a few vital steps to take to help our novice customers in the reupholstering process.

Step One

Figure out your budget. A job like this can add up and dent your pockets pretty deep if you are not clear on your limits. Factor in costs such as fabric yardage, labor, poly foam cushioning and notions for a completed job.

Step Two

Decide who is going to do the reupholstering . Research car dealers, auto trimmers, detailers, and upholstery shops to see who has the most knowledge on the subject and the best pricing. If you are crafty enough, think about doing it yourself. It can save you time and money if you know what you are doing.

Step Three

Figure out what kind of material you want to use, which is best to use for your reupholstering project and most especially…how much you will need. 12 yards of vinyl that may work well as a covering for your seats will not always be the best for your headliner or flooring. For headliners, we carry a colorful assortment of lightweight suede cloths that adds a nice classy touch to any interior. Once you decide on the color and material, confirm with your upholsterer then check J&O Fabrics store for that perfect match.

Most fabric stores carry a selection of various prints, weights and textures to choose from. At J&O, we carry one of the largest in the world and can help you bring your dream car to life in the blink of an eye. If you are looking for glitz and glam, we have sparkling diamond jubilee vinyl. No Red Prada stiletto will go unnoticed when emerging from your metal framed world of silver ‘bling-bling’. If you are in the mood for something cool, we can supply you with enough material to create an ocean of blue within the four doors of your 2008 Chevy Impala to make it feel like you are cruising in a deep sea oasis….without the fish.

Whatever your fancy or fantasy, let J&O help bring them into fruition, one car at a time.

Ultra Craft Ideas with Ultra Suede.

Lemon, lime, avocado, celery, olive, tangerine…..no, it’s not the list of ingredients for an exotic salad we are making, it’s just some of the fabulous colors we have to offer you from our new Ultra-suede fabric collection.

This beautiful collection has the look and feel of real suede without the animal byproduct. So for all of our vegan friends, search no more. Buffalo, buck, camel and doe may be on our palate list, but none were harmed in bringing these deeply rich and vibrant shades your way.

Made with 100% polyester facing and 50% poly / 50% cotton backing, our ultra suede makes the perfect fabric for stylish upholstering and footwear. The versatility of this soft & durable fabric doesn’t stop here. Create fashionable home accent pieces, garments and accessories from this fabulous modern designer material as well.

Here are some other great ideas people just like you are making with their ultra suede fabrics that are sure to get your own creative juices flowing! With a little imagination and personal touch, you can bring those beautiful one-of-a-kind-ultra-suede craft creations to life!

A new ultra suede window treatment for the library in your mothers old Victorian home…in Taupe.

It was right there by the antique stove that you earned your first burn scar, when you went running through the kitchen top speed and accidentally knocked over a pot of boiling water waiting for the fresh vegetables she picked and prepared for her tasty soup.

It was here, right on this very front porch swing, that you sat for hours waiting for her to arise from her attentively tended flower bed to take you to the park before the slow falling summer sun surrendered her rays to the night.
For all the memories of youth that are still alive in that old Victorian your mother still keeps. For all she has been and done for you during your carefree youthful days; why not return the love by giving the home she holds sacred, an interior upgrade with our beautiful taupe colored ultra suede.

There are many simple styles of curtains, shades, valances, and other window treatments that you can easily create to dress her tall library windows. The key is to keep things in balance, rather than overpower the space with too many contrasting fabrics.

If you are using several fabric treatments in the room, our ultra suede color palate offers soft natural hues as well as rich vibrant tones to mix and match for that perfect look. Coordinate a solid with a print, or combine two contrasting solids together. Our ultra suede offers a stylish and classy finish to an already sophisticated room without taking away from the old fashioned flair. Not only decorative and beautiful, they are easy to make as well.

Using two of the same fabrics already featured in the space, cut pieces from each one that are large enough to cover your windows. Always cut the fabric a bit larger to account for seam allowances. A half inch to one inch on each side is sufficient for window treatments.

Lay out one of the fabric pieces, "face" up, and the other, on top of it, "face" down. Make sure the faces of the fabrics are together. Sew along the top edges and both sides. Turn the shades right-side-out, and sew the bottom edges closed. These window treatments can be hung from ribbons sewn along the top. Add ribbons at the bottom as well, so when you want the shades open you can tie the bottom ribbons to the curtain rod. When the shades are open, both fabrics will be displayed.

If you can hang a curtain rod, you can create dramatic window treatments in five to ten minutes, by draping your luxuriant ultra suede fabric over the rods. This is a lovely no-sew window treatment that anyone can make.
A valance is another favorite among window treatments and usually used for purely decorative purposes. You will need a piece of ultra suede fabric approximately twice as wide as your window and about sixteen inches long.
Start by hemming the sides and bottom to create smooth edges.

Next, fold the top edge over about four inches, toward the backside of the fabric.

Sew a straight line at the two-inch mark, to create a ruffle, and then sew just above the four-inch mark, to attach the bottom edge. This will create a rod pocket.

Slide the valance onto the curtain rod, and scrunch and fluff as desired.

Even if you don't have a lot of decorating or sewing experience, you can make your own window treatments. They are simple and fun to make, and when your guests compliment the look, you have the added bonus of saying you made the treatments yourself.

A Reupholstered chair in Persimmon Orange, just because you can.

The spring is not only a time of renewal and change, it is also a time for us as humans to engage in the conditioned and socialized pattern of house cleaning. Thought it seems we are not the only ones who participate in this sometimes rewarding, sometimes saddening practice. Squirrels, birds and even bears partake in a similar attempt to revise and renew.

We clean out closets, give away old clothes and upgrade outdated furnishings and appliances. Carelessly, we sometimes throw out perfectly good sofas and chairs that seemed to have gotten caught in a time capsule and ended up in our living space, not realizing its true potential. What was fashionably stylish in the 70’s can often times be again, with a simple change in the fabric.
Re-upholstering our favorite chairs and sofas can bring new life and energy to a room. Re-upholstering with a rich and vibrant color like Persimmon Orange can add spice to that new life and an energy that speaks to your youthful soul like no other color.

When deciding on how much of that ultra suede to buy, keep in mind that the type of cushion you are covering will impact the amount of yardage used, the layout, and if a pattern is required. (Check a yardage chart for amount required here). If you are a novice, then having an experienced upholsterer check out your furniture to give you an accurate estimate of how much material you may require is best. They can also address any unforeseen work that may arise.
Top off your new sofa or chair with some coordinating accent pillows, and viola! , reincarnation from the dead!

Add some pizzazz to your plain and simple recreational room, or enhance an already funky retro colored bedroom just by changing the fabric.

Our ultra suede is not only soft, but it offers the kind of durability needed for all the ‘plops’ and ‘flops’ it will take at the end of a hard day. Get really creative by adding trim onto your suede for a truly one-of-a-kind design.

The grit and grind of life may wear off on you, but not your ultra-suede. This fabric is stain resistant and with a little help from a good suede cleaning product, spot washing offers a good-as-new look for long lasting use.
