Studies show that infants and toddlers, though unable to verbally express their wants and needs yet, can communicate through the use of sign language with much success. Imagine wanting water and not being able to tell someone, or needing help putting on your shoes, but nobody can understand you. Sometimes crying is not enough. With sign language, not only is the distress on the caregiver and child alleviated, but the child is learning a second language that he or she can use the rest of their life. At J&O Fabrics, we carry a ton of fun and fanciful childrens prints, but none as uniquely cute and educational as this. Designed for both parents and children, this is a great fabric to learn and teach with. When we are born, we are swaddled in symbolic colored baby blankets marking the arrival of a brand new baby boy or girl. Our new parents set us up in custom designed rooms painted in pretty pastels and primary colors, an expression of love, and a welcome into what in some cases, is an unloving world. We are adored and adorned in the finest trims, prepared to spend our early years in pampered bliss and peaceful joy. This notion of being surrounding with the things that bring joy and pleasure, appreciation in the moment, and keeping a positive approach to life no matter come what may is not always the easiest stance to uphold as we grow older, and what brings joy for one, may not bring joy for another. But if it can make this precious time here a little more rewarding, why not go all the way. Statistics have shown that when individuals are informed of pending death due to possible terminal health issues like Cancer or AIDS, or if they have survived near death experiences, they have a new respect for time and the quality of life they are living. Some become less self sacrificing and more self appreciating, some conquer their wish lists with fervor, while others slow down and surround themselves with all the things that feel good to their soul. From weekly manicures and shopping sprees, to daily meditation and trips to faraway places, the little bit of happiness in an increasingly unhappy world, is essential to find and nurture.
Take death for instance. For some, the mind is limited by preconceived notion that when our bodies turn cold, we will be mourned into our cold coffins and placed 6 feet under in cold soil, until whenever. But why does it have to be that way? And why does our joyful environment have to end when our heart stops beating? Why not make our final resting place and every ritual leading up to it, as inspiring and reflective of our individual personalities as the lives we lead? Im talking about trading in that wooden or stark velvet lined black metal coffin for one lined in your favorite NFL team print, or designed with a pretty floral print symbolic of that garden you could always be found lovingly tending to every evening. Or what about a coffin that doesnt even look like a coffin at all, but maybe is crafted in the image of a horse and lined with an equestrian printed cotton because you grew up on a farm and always loved riding at the rodeo. Ingenious...no. Creative...yes. In fact hundreds of years ago in Ancient Egypt and various indigenous cultures they did the same thing. The deceased were sent away with not only spiritual articles to carry with them into the next world, but with personal possessions as well. The idea is no different. If we get morticians to make us beautiful, why not hire casket makers to do the same. All it takes is a selection of fabric that speaks to your being, and a skillful crafter to put it all together. We dont seem to have much choice on when or how we will die, we do seem to have a choice on how we live. Live life to its fullest, from the cradle to the grave! natural organic fabric Labels: african-fabric, custom-made-casket, death, dress-fabric, fantasy-casket, frugal, life, novelty-cotton-fabric, unique-fabric-crafts
"Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages, Welcome to the Greatest Show on Earth!" The circus has come to town and J&O is celebrating with Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey inspired fabrics and prints in honor of all the magic and magnificence the Big Top has brought to children young and old in its over 135 years of existence. Though the official union between the Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey circuses didnt occur until 1919, the entertaining of town folks by men dressed up as clowns, ladies performing eye popping acrobatic feats, wondering freaks of nature, and trainers commanding dangerous animals from exotic places, has been going on since as far back as 1871 when Dan Castello and William Cameron Coup of Delavan, Wisconsin had their group entitled " P.T. Barnums Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Hippodrome". From their debut in 1919 at Madison Square Garden in NY, to their final show in Pittsburg, PA on July 16, 1956, Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus has managed to keep the show going through the generations as ownership was exchanged and passed down creating new and fascinating changes. To date, Ringling Bros. Circus continues to travel across the United States by rail, stopping to perform at various cities along the way. Though modern forms of entertainment, animal rights activists and an ever demanding population of tech savvy teens have diminished the awe and excitement surrounding the circus, there will always remain a nostalgic memory of the big top for all those who have entered into the tent of daring trapeze flyers, flipping little people in clown costumes, whip snapping lion tamers, and rollerskating elephants; memories that are reawakened through our Ringling Bros themed fabrics and coordinating prints. They say life is a three ringed circus...so Enjoy! Dear Netfah,I have a rather plain olive colored Euro sham and comforter that I want to revitalize and use in our guest room. I saw some really pretty cording trims and wanted to know if the ones with the lip are more appropriate for application around the seams on the bedding or the cording withOUT the lip?
- To Lip or Not To Lip Sante Fe, NM Dear To Lip or Not To Lip,
The great thing about trims is that with a little creativity and ingenuity, they can turn outdated and out of fashion furnishing, garments and accessories into modern works of art.
When working with cording, especially on a project like this one, the key is stitchwork. While many opt to use a cording with no lip and hand stitch it to pillows and smaller items, if the project is a little bigger, it can become a rather arduous and time consuming task. For your Euro sham and comforter, it is suggested that you use a cord with a lip. It will allow for easy machine stitching application, and create a beautiful new look to your plain bedding. An added bonus with lipped cording is that you can always remove the lip with a seam ripper if needed. Fabric glue can then be used to apply to the desired project. Available in sizes starting at 3/16" on up, decorative cording is an affordable alternative to revamping any interior decor or garment.

Sunday July 26, 2009 marked this years 15th Annual Parents Day. Recognized since 1994 and celebrated throughout the United States with award ceremonies, dinners, conferences and communal gatherings, Parents Day was originally created to acknowledge, honor, uplift and support moms and dads in their often overlooked roles in the lives of their children. Targeting, but not excluding the roles of the elders and surrogate parents that exist in many communities, Parents Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the investment, commitment and energy given to the children in the attempt to equip and prepare them for tomorrows world. Often wearing many hats, parents not only take on the responsibility of acting as role models, but as doctors, mentors, nutritionists, educators, therapists, taxi drivers and stylists in the seemingly never ending journey into their childrens adulthood. In honor of Parents Day and all those who play an active and positive role in the life of a child, J&O Fabrics offers a plethora of child themed fabrics and prints as well as a beautiful selection of men and women inspired designs for the provider in all of us. Microfiber is a fiber with less than 1 denier per filament and is used to make non-woven and knitted textiles. Commonly used for apparel, upholstery, and in cleaning solutions, microfiber has become a very popular alternative to cotton activewear and undergarment apparel because the microfiber material wicks moisture away from the body instead of against it, thus keeping the wearer cool and dry. Microfiber is also used to make tough yet soft materials for general clothing use and outerwear. It can even be made into an imitiation suede called ultra-suede which is less expensive, vegan, and easier to clean than the real suede. (ultra-suede was the first successful synthetic to hit the US market in the late 1970s). Additional characteristics of not only polyester microfiber but synthetic textile fibers as well include high absorption, water repellency, high electrodynamics and durability. When high-quality microfiber is combined with the right knitting process, it creates an extremely effective cleaning material as well. J&O Fabrics nominates polyester microfiber fabric as the No1 fabric of the week and welcomes you to experience the benefits of it for yourself. A great material for working out in, creating sensual yet modest womens undergarments, or even designing weather resistant outerwear, polyester microfiber is one of the hot new fabrics of the 21st Century. Whether you thought about it before, are in the process of doing it now, or wrote it off as something only women and homemakers did because it is still considered taboo in most cultures, learning to sew for yourself has more benefits than just mending a hole or putting a button back on a shirt. With the American dollar loosing its value, our country still at war, and people from all walks of life feeling the effects of Mother Nature's attempts to survive global warming and mans made pollution, times are calling for us to be just a little more economically frugal, resourceful, ecofriendly and self sufficient. With this in mind, what better way to support all of the above by taking a class, or two, or three. The pros outweigh the cons, and in the end, you are adding yet another entry to your list of accomplishments. If you still feel uninspired, maybe the list below might encourage you to try something new. Top 10 Reasons for Learning How to Sew!1. It will make you more independent and self sufficient.Think about it. What better feeling than to be able to say that you can do it yourself!2. It will save you money. This really should be number one, but I am a big advocate for liberating folks, so second place it is. Why pay more for clothing and home accent pieces than you have to. A pair of new trousers at most retail stores will cost you an average of $25-75 bucks. A pair of your own machine sewn trousers will cost you about $10-15. You do the math. 3. You will never meet your reflection on the street. This might be more of a concern for ladies then men, but most people cringe at the thought of coming face to face with the same barbie pink dress on another passerbyer. Create the look you want in the size you want, when you want it.4. It can bring out the creative God/Goddess in you.Whether you use a machine or hand stitch, there is something about crafting fabric into something new that stirs your imaginative juices. Give it a try. 5. It will bring out the alpha male in you. You didnt think sewing was just for woman did you? The appeal of a man who can hem his own pants then run out and save the world with his intellect and charm is just too delicious!6. It will always come in handy. Whether you find yourself needing to replace a button, repair a rip or attend an affair, all you need is a good pair of scissors, a strong spool of thread and a trusty machine to become your own hero. 7. If you can sew, you can create great gifts for holidays, birthdays, any day!Unique one-of-a-kind gifts that might also be cost effective... way to go! 8. You dont have to be an expert in order to sew a straight line, you just have to be willing. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned seamstress, basic garment construction is much simpler than it seems. Learn the basics and the rest will follow. 9. Learning a new skill is cool! The brain is a muscle that excersize strengthens. Excersize your brain by learning something new.10. You can become famous for your creations and for saving the planet at the same time! From Betsy Ross to Linda Loudermilk, the weaving of a needle and thread into fabric has not only created historical figures and top fashion designers, it has also combated the over indulgence of Mother Earths resources into recycleable goods, making the idea of learning to sew not only appealing but essential too. Sitting behind a machine and constructing usable items out of fabric may not be for everyone, but after reviewing the list above, maybe it might just be the newly aquired skill for you. It never hurts to try! Good Luck!

Dear Netfah,I was interested in making a rain coat for my four year old girl, but was not sure what kind of material I should be purchasing. I would like it to be kind of see through like the rain capes from my own childhood. I saw some vinyl online, but it looked too heavy. Any suggestions?-Rain Rain Go Away, Ellicott City MDDear Rain Rain in Maryland,I used to have one with ducks on it when I was a little girl. I even had an umbrella to match. Now that I am an adult, I wish they made them for my size because they protected so well. The kind of material that is best suited for the style of rainwear you are looking to create is a lightweight clear plastic vinyl. It is the material most often seen and affiliated with table coverings and tote bags. Well, it is a great water protectant and wipes clean for easy care. Clear vinyl comes in varying thicknesses called gauges that range from 10-30. A 10 gauge vinyl is the thinnest and therefor lightest of the weights. Suitable for a range of uses, 10 gauge vinyl is good for cosmetic purses, storm windows, and some garments. The thicker 30 gauge vinyl is harder to sew through and is used primarily for seat covers and greenhouses. As always, it is best to get samples before ordering any yardage if you want to be sure the material you are purchasing is suited for the project at hand.Check out the selection of solid vinyl at J&O Fabrics here!

Whenever it rains really hard, my auntie says its 'raining cats and dogs'. I grew up hearing this saying from not only my family, but the elders in my community as well. I never really understood where it came from or why it was used to describe a heavy rain to I did my research and this is what I found. The metaphor or idiom (whichever you prefer) had several suggested sources ranging from a greek aphorism meaning an 'unlikely occurance', a mythological symbolism for rain (cats) and wind (dogs), to an expression of sensory overload as in the case where the loud sound of the rain caused the ears to hurt, like the loud sound of cats meowing and dogs howling. But the meaning that seemed to have the deepest roots and strongest following was the one that connects the metaphor to a period in time when the streets of 17th & 19th century Britian were so dirty and poorly constructed that many cats and dogs would drown whenever there was a storm. People seeing the corpses floating by would think the animals had falled from the sky. Further reading gives reference to a poem by Jonathan Swift dating back to 1710 called "A Description of a City Shower " where the author describes a similar scene to that of the rainstorms in England. "Sweeping from butchers stalls, dung, gut, and blood; Drowned puppies, sinking sprats, all drenched in mud, Dead cats, and turnip-tops, come tumbling down the flood." If nothing less, my findings certainly gave new meaning to an otherwise beautiful rainy day.

Sewing Tip of the Week #1I have been in love with clothing since I was a little girl. How colors looked on a model, how the fabric draped, and most especially, how their full ensemble looked once all the pieces were in place all appealed to my visual and creative senses. I would spend hours a day designing new looks and rumminging through JC Penny, Sears and Speigal catalogs imagining the day I would make manifest the ideas on the sketch pad in front of me When I was in highschool I took my hobby to the next level by designing prom dresses for my friends and classmates. Too impatient with all the seemingly unnecessary applications to utilize the McCall, Butterick and Vogue patterns available to me, I relied on a family friend to actually sew the designs into the beautiful eye catchers they were intended to be. As I entered college and adult hood, the money I could stand to make by creating garments on campus became a way of paying my bills and putting food in my dorm fridge. But I still struggled with patterns and soon found myself feeling like a little girl in shoes to big, trying to make sense of it all. Eventually, I did away with patterns alltogether and found salvation at off campus thrift stores and yard sales. If I saw a design in a fashion magazine or created on in my head, I would rummage through the racks until I found similar styles that I could DE-construct and then RE-construct into the desired garment. Problem solved! A cap sleeved top here, combined with a the hoodie of another jersey there, these pieces became my new patterns with a little creativity and determination. Once I found the look and proper size for myself or my excited clients, all I had to do was purchase the fabric and voila! Not only did construction now make sense, but it saved me money too. Sure, it took more time to find what I needed, but what artsy woman with an obsession for fashion doesn't enjoy a good treasure hunt now and then? Today I have developed enough skill to make my own patterns or even go free style with none at all; just my good eye and steady hand. I can still be found between the isles of a Goodwill or Salvation Army, but now it is for a cause. Recycling clothing is a cool way to cut back on the overconsumption of natural resources and help save Mother Earth. My sewing tip of the week? If conventional store bought patterns do not quite work for you, find what does. But whatever you do, never give up on yourself. My son read an artical to me this morning regarding bananas that I found quite interesting. In the artical, the author spoke about how the banana 'fruit' was scientifically classified as a herbaceous plant (bush) of the Musacea family. In laments terms, this commonly called fruit that we eat is actually a flowering herb and a member of the lily family. Banana's do NOT grow on trees in the true sense, since the banana plants have no wood fiber and not only that, scientists actually classify the banana as a berry based on the fact that berries are identified as being 'many seeded' with a 'fleshy inner layer'; just like bananas. As one of my favorite 'fruits', I knew about the nutritional properties and various culinary uses of the banana, but this little tid bit of info really surprised me to the point that I felt compelled to share my new found knowledge with anyone willing to read it; even if they did already know. Since I am also a seamstress and a big fan of fabric textiles, I thought I'd ad a little pictorial tribute to highlight our sweet starch of substance, the Yellow Orchid Herb. After all, a banana a day keeps low potassium away.

Have you ever been to a clothing swap? If you haven't you are really missing out on not only some great fun, but some great finds. I was invited to my first one from a girlfriend of mine who shops at a private design boutique called Simply Netfah. It is a specialty boutique that carries beautiful wholistic clothing and accessories for women and every spring they hold a gathering at their place where invited clients gather among good food and good company, to exchange old and unwanted articles of clothing from their closets for new ones. It is the boutique owner's way of giving back to Mother Earth through the encouragement of clothing recycling and sustaining her community through barter exchange. It was a Sunday afternoon, and when my girlfriend and I got there, it was packed! Women from around the city had come to not only discover hidden treasures on the racks of wore-only-once and what-was-i-thinking fashions, but to unload their haute couture filled closets to make room for more. It was a smorgasbord of 'oooh's' and 'aaahs' as we both hung our once trendy give aways up for interested viewers. By the end of the afternoon, I had found a beautiful white Ashro convertible Goddess Dress, a pair of Steve Madden beaded leather flip flops and three Simply Netfah designer's cut originals, all for the price of, well, you guessed it... FREE! One woman's trash really IS another woman's treasure. By recycling old clothing I saved time from having to shop all over town which reduced the cost of gas fare on my pocket and fuel pollution in the air, I reduced the need for manufacturers to use up more natural resources to make new garments, and I saved a whole lot of money too. Who would have thought helping to save the planet would be so much fun! So, gather your friends and family and hold your own clothing exchange, or hop on the world wide web to see how you can play your part in making the place we call home a healthier and more sustainable place for all Earth's creatures. I guarantee it will be worth it. In these economically uncertain times, our survival skills kick in and our natural response is to cut back, cut out and hold our breath while the nightly news reports on yet another mass lay off of jobs. We join the ever growing population of stressed out worker bees and me-myself-and-I clones in the competitive rat race called 'life', who find truth in the encouraged notion that it is survival of the fittest, with no rest for the weary. It is a delusional and vicious spiral of continuous fear based responses that chip away at the 'reality' of what it means to be alive. And while this method works for some, it is not the remedy of choice for everyone. There is another group of people who are ready, willing and able to look at the economic challenge and see an opportunity to create and REcreate their life, and help others along the way as well. They are able to turn their stumbling blocks of lost jobs and income into stepping stones, and their obstacles of financial exhaustion, into opportunities. It is amazing how creative we can be when our backs are against the wall. What better time than now, to nurture all those gifts we carry but have discarded as silly little hobbies from our younger years. What better way to REcreate our circumstances, than to pull out those carpentry books we tucked neatly away for a rainy day read, take a free class in photography at the community college, or unfold those wisely preserved and still stylish designer fabrics and never used Singer machine that you promised yourself one day you would create magnificent fashions with. What better time than now to put down our worries and fears of what tomorrow may bring, and challenge ourselves to creating the future we want for ourselves. It really is a matter of perspective, and at J&O Fabrics, we strive to make it our business to tempt you with enough eye catching fleece, upholstery, decorative, novelty and organic fabrics to bring out the successful survivor in all of us. Because even if your passion isn't crafting, your creative juices will start to flow in one direction or another. The time is now. I remember when I gave birth to my first son over ten years ago. I was a first time mom and unexptected single parent earning a modest living as a designer with no real nest egg set up for myself or my little one. I worried whether or not I would have enough money to buy formula, pay the bills to keep the roof over our heads, or keep him clothed properly when it seemed every day he grew a little more. Without much experience to guide me along, I found myself stumbling on a journey into motherhood with a series of trials and errors that would one day become my Bible. I found financial assistance from various agencies set up for women like myself, continued to nurture my gift of creativity to increase my business profits, and realized the benefits of community....and hand-me-downs! As my little infant grew into a crawling baby and then a walking toddler, I found the benefits of the 'old school' clothing and fabric exchange our parents used to use, to be quite a remedy. After my first initial gifting of brand new baby clothes during my baby shower, I hardly saw 'brand new' again except at special occasions like holidays or my baby's birthday. Surprisingly enough, I never missed it. I made my own children's sets out of the fabric I was given or dressed my son in the outfits I was blessed with. Plus babies grow out of clothing so fast that they really don't have much time to wear and tear. And when you have a community of parents with babies older and younger than your own, it becomes a rhythm of give and take just like the seasons. Before long, my son was reaching into his school years with little to no need for brand new. In fact, aside from underwear and shoes, I can't remember needing for any clothes during his formative years. My point? In these frugal times when priority spending is the name of the game and the security of tomorrow's paycheck is not so certain anymore, there is one thing that is. Community has always been the foundation and salvation of a people, especially during times of struggle, and it still is today. Even if it is just hand-me-down clothing and fabric. Dear Netfah, What is corduroy material and how do I determine its wale?-Heather, Chicago Il Dear Heather, The long, parallel cords formed by the twisting and weaving of fabric fibers creates the corduroy pattern that is synonymous with the durable and lasting material itself. The thickness of the cords, known as the 'wale' of the corduroy, adds warmth and texture to the fabric, making it popular for use in winter garments and upholstery. The width of the 'wale' often determines what kind of project the corduroy is best suited for. For instance, corduroy with a narrow wale is usually softer to the touch, less durable, and often used for shirts. Corduroy with a wide wale is usually used for making heavier pants and furniture upholstery. When it comes down to the wale count per inch, there are usually three categories they fall under; the classic wide wale, lightweight and velvety pin wale, and the ultra fine micro wale. The width of the cord usually carries a thickness of 1.5 to 21. The lower the 'wale' number per inch, the thicker the width of the wale (i.e. an 8-wale is much thicker than a 21-wale corduroy fabric). While images of corduroy fabric usually conjure up memories of scratchy material with a stiff hand, the corduroy selection of today is anything but. Now that you have a little more information on this versatile fabric, have fun shopping!Check out J&O Fabrics great corduroy fabric here! Check out J&O Fabrics dress fabric here! Designing new fashions and manifesting unique ideas into fruition is just part of the territory here at J&O Fabrics. It's almost impossible not to be inspired to try our hand at something new amongst the multitude of assorted bolts that make up the colorful walls of this mom & pop brick and martyr. Take for instance, Nydiadada. A lively and jovial mother of three, this seasoned woman with a youthful heart recently made all of us custom apron and dish towel sets for the holidays. As we each pulled our gift wrapped sets out with gleaming smiles on our faces and gracious thanks on our lips, we were delighted to discover that each apron looked even better than the next and at the end of it all, a beautiful array of colorful personalized kitchen attire emerged. From Judy's ' Chocolate Treats' apron to Netfah's ' Enkai's Children' set, Nydiadada created reflections of each of us on these cute terry cloth and novelty cotton crafts that would hold a place in our hearts for years to come. Gone are the days of creative thinking and imagination. As the shelves of our local toy stores fill with more and more electronic devises like PSP's, DS Systems, and the Wee, more and more parents are ditching their ancient arts and crafts supplies and investing in a future of artificial intelligence and mental over-stimulation for their little boys and girls. Some are spending money they don't have and encouraging a life of immediate gratification void of physical interaction, and wondering why their children seem so desensitized by life. But who says children don't like hand made toys anymore? And what child doesn't still get filled with pride and joy at the sight of a fantastically cool game, craft or toy they made all by themselves? It was less than a week ago that my 11 year old son and his friends found themselves home from school due to a passing snow storm that left several inches on our neighborhood lawns. Too cold to go out, and too bored to stay in, my son and his friends created countless mundane ways to compete on their electronic entertainment systems and revisit a continually disappointing cabinet of healthy snacks throughout the morning hours. Bearing witness to this modern atrosity, I gathered up my stash of fabrics, trims, crafts and other tid bit supplies and called the boys to the kitchen table for some good old fashion fun. Finger puppets would be the project of the afternoon, and with a little felt, fabric glue, plastic eyes, yarn and some great decorating stuff, I set the doubtful yet willing pre-teens off to create uniquely wonderful works of art for at least an hour or two of five finger fun. From a puppet that looks like their favorite entertainer, favorite animal, or that fabulous face in the mirror. And with that, I left three pre-teen children to their own device. The end result....some really cool finger puppets for three gloating boys who haven't forgotten how to have some good old fashion finance free fun ......without electrical interference. To create your own felt crafts like the finger puppet project mentioned above, check out the following family friendly websites: www.allfreecrafts.com or www.familyfun.com, and then visit us at https://www.jandofabrics.com/index.htm for our great selection of colorful felt fabric. January 20, 2009 will go down in U.S. fashion history not only as the day the first African-American stood before millions to take his official oath of office at the 44th President of the United States, but also as the day his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, took her silent and UN-official oath to represent savvy diva style for all the smart, elegant, feminine, yet powerful women of the seasoned bunch. If you were brave enough to weather the cold and stand in the melting pot of many to catch a firsthand glimpse of the Inauguration ceremonies and celebrations, then you probably couldn't help but be taken back to the days of the Kennedy's and the fashions inspired by then First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Donned in a simple yet sophisticated lemongrass sheath made of Swiss wool with an overlay of lace, Michelle was a symbol of warmth and optimism as she took her rightful place beside her man. Backed with netting for warmth, and lined with pashmina and french silk, the First Lady appeared stylishly comfortable and confident despite the biting cold and arduous schedule of events of the day. Later that night at the Neighbor's Ball, Michelle would be swept off her feet by her knight in shining armor as the two affectionate lovebirds joined hands on the dance floor to Beyonce's "At Last". Draped in an ivory colored one shoulder floor length Jason Wu original made with silk chiffon and embellished with hundreds of Swarovski crystals and fabric petals, the First Lady reflected purity and hope as the majority of Americans watched this time, not from the wintery streets of Washington D.C., but from the comforts of their living rooms, bar stools, churches and gathering places; all in support of the handsome White House couple on their monitors and TV screens. To create your own elegant look, search no further than J&O Fabrics. With hundreds of dress fabrics to choose from and a plethora of designs to express the uniqueness that is you, J&O Fabrics is your #1 source for the perfect fabric to bring out the beautiful Lady in you! They say every man is born with a purpose, and from an early age, the unseen hand of purpose was upon Barack Obama; molding and shaping him, guiding him into and throughout his political career until his purpose met with victory at the 2008 presidential elections. A victory meant for him at this place and this time in the evolution of mankind. A purpose no more and no less than the little girl who grows up to become a successful actress or the little boy who becomes a starving artist. That all three honored their respective purposes is the dream most wish and strive to fulfill. And speaking of dreams... J&O has a dream come true just for you. For a limited time you don't have to travel all the way to Washington, D.C. to get a sight of this history making president, instead, just come over to J&O Fabrics and meet him face to face! That's right, Barack Obama is right here at J&O Fabrics just in time for you to make a special request his presence in your home, office, or as an inspirational travel companion along your journey through life. Reflect in his presence, the road that lead him to the White House and the many motivational speeches he gave along the way. Whether Democratic or Republic, rich or poor, or any walk of life, there is something to be said about the spoken hopes and dreams of Barack Obama. Barack Obama, a man with a mission and a message. Barack Obama, a man with a vision for humanity. Barack Obama, history in the making, making history for the whole world to see. Our 44th President summed it up best during his speech following the Super Tuesday results in February 08' when he said simply, " We are the ones we have been waiting for." We all have a purpose, a part to play in this thing called life. So play it to win. You never know where it will lead you. As 2009 rolls in, we are met with the opportunity to make yet another attempt to start and, yes, actually follow through, with our new year’s resolutions. Whether it is starting a new diet, beginning an exercise program, or embarking on a new career path, these commitments made to us, by us, are reflections of our desire to better ourselves and our lives in some small or big way. Hailed as one of the most sought after contemporary artists in Britain today, designer Faye Whitaker just can’t help but take us back to an age of innocence and sweet surrender with her Friendship by the Sea line of designs for Elizabeth’s Studio. From the moment you rest your weary eyes upon her works of seaside inspired art, the stress lines and worry wrinkles of a life far too hectic, start to quietly fade away. You are instantly transported back the days of your youth, where sunsets seemed never ending, and the ocean would sing you her sweet lullaby until the sandman swept you gently away. Born just north of England and equipped with her own distinctive palette of colors along with a romantic eye that never lost sight of the age of antiquity, Faye brings her interpretations to life here in her design for Elizabeth’s Studio simply called ‘Friendship Beach’. With her watercolor medium and contemporary style, we watch as little children float handcrafted toy sailboats, splash playfully in the cool waters, and dream of visiting the place where the big blue sea meets the orange colored horizon. Printed against a sky blue canvas on a soft 100% cotton fabric, ‘Friendship Beach’ carries with it not only a 15 ¾”h x 7 ¾” v repeat, but all the internal peace and tranquility one could dream of in the days of innocence and youth. For all the reasons I child’s mind can see, Faye Whitaker’s ‘Friendship Beach’ is our pick for the fabric award of the week. With stocks loosing value, rising food costs, a recession that doesn’t seem to be leaving us any time soon, and an added $700 billion dollars in additional National debt that those most in need will never see, some are finding it hard to find reason to celebrate this New Year’s Eve. On the flip side, many Americans are looking forward with hopeful anticipation to the possibilities 2009 and a new U.S. President can bring. Here at J&O, our customers are part of the optimistic bunch that have decided to use their artistic gifts to create the future they want to see; not only in the world around them, but with the crafts and designs they carefully form in their minds and manifest with their hands. Beautiful works of art in the form of garments, quilts, window dressings and more pour out of their living rooms, small workshops and kitchen countertops and into the welcoming hands of thankful receivers. Visions of love and life, dreams of world peace and joyful rebellion, found in between the repeat of a colorful novelty print or within the intricate designs of an inspirational tapestry; a mixture of creativity and fabulous fabric right here inside these four walls of our magical enclave.

2008 began a whole new cycle according to the Chinese Astrological Calendar. It was the year and the time for planting the seeds for the next twelve years, assessing our dreams and goals, and asking ourselves some really hard questions about what we want and who we want it with. The year of the Rat required us to look ourselves in the mirror, breathe a deep breath, and take those calculated steps forward without looking back. And that we did. In 2008 Michael Phelps stepped up to the podium at the Olympics in Beijing and received his eight record winning medals with a smile of accomplishment and pride only a few months before governor Barack Obama ascended the stage before millions of viewers worldwide and became the first African American president elect of the United States in what many would call a monumentous event marking not only a shift in the consciousness of Americans from various ethnic and economic backgrounds, but in the future generation as well. Auto drivers across America saw an increase in gasoline prices that reached some of the highest in history topping out at almost $5.00 per gallon, while stocks dropped to some of their lowest points as individuals and families fought to make their way through an increasing economic recession, wondering when they would get their $700 billion dollar bailout from Bush. As global warming and sustainable resource issues found their way into the conversations of both the young Gen X crew and the older Baby Boomers of the 40’s and 50’s, India set a world record by sending ten satellites into orbit in a single launch, and frozen water was found on Mars. But as 2008 comes to a close and 2009 welcomes in the opportunity to meet our challenges with fear that will destroy mother Earth and her people, or with love that will ultimately cleanse the planet of all negative influences and help us to make the kind of choices that will bring us peace and joy, Americans contemplate their choices with a little more thought. 2009 is the year of the Ox and in that year; babies will be born possessing great leadership qualities including patience, strength, and organizational skills. Those who have been quiet in the past will now feel the urge to speak and they will have profound things to say. Visionaries will be the ne w celebrities and we will welcome their messages of faith and hope for the future. As we remember our brothers and sisters who left legacies behind in 2008, memorable names like South African songstress Mariam Makeba, Swiss explorer Jacques Piccard, comedian Bernie Mac, Chess Grandmaster Bobbie Fisher, and French Fashion Designer extraordinaire Yves Saint Laurent forever remain in our minds as reminders of the power of one. Uniting mankind together to learn about the true meaning of what it means to be human and part of a universal collective for the good of all will be our true test if we are willing to look ourselves in the mirror, breathe a deep breath, and take those calculated steps forward without looking back. I know we can do it, just as we did. From all of us, to all of you, keep believing, keep creating, and keep moving forward. The dream of tomorrow is worth it. With Christmas less than a few days away and Kwanzaa soon following, why not pull on your creative juices and save a little money at the same time with great fabric gift wrappings and bows? For most crafters and designers alike, fabric scraps from botched projects, incomplete projects, and projects with more fabric left over than used, often times accumulate into colorful mountains of textured material eagerly waiting to be recycled and put to good use. Many times the end result is a funky reconstructed shirt, festively trimmed greeting card, or cute little fabricated doll for the holidays. But what about using that beautiful fabric as an inexpensive and easy substitute for actual store bought wrapping paper for use during the holidays and any special occasion. Since fabric can be cut to size just like regular paper, wrapping a gift box in your child’s favorite Disney character or your wife’s favorite material is a great say I love you with an added flair! From Dora and Sesame Street prints, to brocade dress fabrics and Pima dot cottons, the perfect fabric wrap for that special someone is right under your nose. With the added benefit that recycling your fabrics can bring to our ecosystem and in turn, humankind itself, this single craft idea alone contains one of the greatest gifts you can give our planet. That same fabric you used to wrap a gift for your sister is the same fabric that she will use to make a patch for her son’s pants, and the same print her husband will transform into sellable bookmarks for the holiday. It’s the gift that just keeps on giving. To start utilizing your fabric scraps to their fullest, the following instructions are helpful. In as little as 1-2-3, your fun and fabulous fabric wrapping will be garnishing dull shirt boxes in no time. Well, what are you waiting for? Christmas is almost here! Supplies · pinking sheers · fabric scraps · ribbons, twine Instructions Lay your scrap fabric out on a flat surface. Place the gift in the center of your scrap fabric and check the fit to see if you have enough to cover all the sides once cut. Leave about a 1-2” surplus for complete coverage. Fold the corners and sides up together to get a visual measurement then cut your fabric accordingly using your pinking shears to create a nice decorative edge. Wrap the gift box with the fabric. Secure it closed with scrap fabric ribbons, twine, or fabric tape.

Dear Netfah, We are in the planning stages of our school’s annual Christmas play here in Morristown, Tennessee and are in need of black material that we can use to act as a backdrop. The space we are trying to cover is pretty large (appx. 50’w x 20’ h) and we are having a hard time finding a light weight material that is also non-transparent. We saw your black felt on line and wondered if that was a recommended fabric for what we have in mind? -Jenny, Morristown TN Dear Jenny, Thank you for writing in with your inquiry. Surprisingly enough, we get this question often from small theatres and large production companies looking for the right fabric to create the right affect for their stage presentations. While craft felt is a great material for use as wall hangings and banners, and takes well to tacking and sewn on applications, the weight and thickness of the fabric poses a challenge when trying to hang and secure over a large area. You will do better with a lighter weight material that offers you the same benefits, plus additional softness and pliability. An alternative choice would be broadcloth or muslin. Both are usually made from 100% cotton and come in widths ranging from 45” to 108” wide. This is a plus when looking to cover a large area such as your backdrop. And at an average of $2-3 per yard, these options are economical as well. Because both the broadcloth and muslin fabrics are made with natural cotton fibers, they can be machine washed, offering quick and easy laundering with no piling or long drying times. Since you are looking for a black material, and muslin is usually only available in white or off-white, your best bet is the broadcloth. Available in an array of great colors, broadcloth is a wonderful fabric for not only your project needs, but for a wide range of craft ideas. **Yardage Tip**: To convert your feet into yards, first convert into inches. This will make it easier for both you and the employee cutting your material to get you the correct amount of fabric you require. Remember 12" per foot 3 feet per yard therefore,
( Exam: 60’=720”= 20 yards appx.) Send in your Ask Netfah questions to info@jandofabrics.com. We'd love to hear from you! Posts by J&O Fabrics StoreLabels: broadcloth, dear netfah, felt, frugal, muslin, stage backdrop material
If you’re anything like me, these days I’m sure you find yourself cringing in the supermarkets isles. Sometimes I think I’d be better off taking advantage of the dollar menu at the nearest fast food restaurant. Times are tough right now for the average family and as a Mom, I know I feel responsible for making every dollar stretch as far as possible. Sometimes it’s challenging not to take the easy way out. But there are lots of creative choices we can make to stretch our dollars. Maybe all it takes is a shift in our perceptions of a more simplified reality. I am sure I’m not the only one holding onto colorful pieces of cotton, denim and bark cloth. Not to mention trims and other various embellishments. Next time you’re not so little one puts on those jeans and they just aren’t long enough anymore, try adding some length with a 2” scrap of fabric, or a few fabric strips sewn together. While you’re at it you can make it into a fun project. Cut pieces of the design (even team logos) attach a little heat bond and iron on the design to the garment. Bonding these cut designs works great on a tee that has become stained or worn from too much wear. Speaking of fabric scraps. Since we are one of the largest fabric stores in the Tri-State area, we carry totes and totes of these colorful, funky and fancy ¼ yard pieces that literally collect over the years. They sit here taking up space and not paying towards the rent. They want to be put to use, but have been made to feel like they are only good for one thing…..nostalgic memories of craft projects done long ago or worse yet…..unfinished projects!! With the holidays just around the corner, now is the perfect time to rethink your gift giving ideas. When my daughter was born she received many beautiful gifts, but which one does she still wrap her baby dolls in? The crib quilt that her Aunt Sue handmade for her, and me, I still have the “Jingle Bell Jack” my mom made me from scraps. More commonly referred to now as YO-YO dolls, gifts made from the heart last a lifetime. Whatever you do with your time, energy, and resources is up to you. But if you want to make memories and keep a little extra cash in your pocket, consider the creative power of the imagination…enjoy and encourage the artist in you to flourish! The old school saying, “pressure makes diamonds” vibrates as a hopeful reminder that in these crazy economic times, the threat of financial hardship crushing us can serve as a motivation to use our God given imagination to create lemonade out of lemons. And not just any old lemonade either. I’m talking about the kind of lemonade that gets discovered, packaged and sold as an exotic beverage because of its unique texture and taste. You know, the kind that only you can make because there’s only one you in this whole wide world. The kind that creates a demand so great that instead of baking under the unrelenting sun as you earn just enough to get by, you instead find yourself basking under a warm and generous sun as you await your next check from the shares in your now successful beverage line. And to think, this time last year, you were fearing foreclosures and bankruptcy. Now this scenario may seem a little unrealistic when we look at the ridiculous prices on fruits and vegetables, let alone lemons right now. But if you can at least take this concept and apply it to such a degree that you are able to turn your obstacles into opportunities, then you are able to take a look around your environment and see just where you can increase your wealth with minimum expense to your pockets. Take fabric scraps for instance. Since we are one of the largest fabric stores in the Tri-State area, we carry totes and totes of these colorful, funky and fancy ¼ yard pieces that literally collect over the years. They sit here taking up space and not paying towards the rent. They want to be put to use, but have been made to feel like they are only good for one thing…..nostalgic memories of craft projects done long ago and clippings from love momentos for family and friends. I am sure we are not the only ones holding onto colorful pieces of satin, denim and bark cloth. With the holidays quickly approaching, maybe it might be worth the minute or two it would take to pull the scraps out of your own closets and see what creative projects you can revamp or create. Just by adding a fabricated trim to drapes, clothing or home accent pieces, you can change a plain kitchen or living room décor into a holiday oasis. No money for gifts and Christmas is right around the corner? Turn off the part of your brain that says you aren’t a good parent if you don’t buy your children all the latest toys, and instead let that pressure make beautiful one-of-a-kind gifts that little Suzy will cherish long after Polly Pocket has lost her touch. A crafty sweatshirt with autographed inscriptions in glittery fabric pens from all her neighborhood friends or a handmade ‘no-sew’ Angelina Ballerina fleece throw for those cold winter nights can make your 8 year old feel like the princess that she is, and she would owe it all to you and your crafty ways. Netfah: Ask me a question, I will tell you no lie. With so many trade terms and technological advances, it can get tricky figuring out what fabrics would work best for what projects, or even what materials you may require to complete a creative task. For the answers to these questions and so much more, simply send me an email. Each week we will select a request from our pool and post a response for our viewing audience to see. We can't guarantee we'll get to yours first, but we will do our best to get to each and every one. Just Ask Netfah.... Gina: With so much talk about going green, global warming and recycled vs reconstructed, people around the world and across America are looking to do their part in saving our planet so that she can save us. And while some fall under the misconception that we have to find a solution to world pollution on our own with just one invention, more people are realizing the answer lies in the little things we do. From recycling textiles and clothing from our shelves, to purchasing fabric made from hemp or bamboo, the power of one is very powerful indeed. Check out Go Green Gina once a week as she offers up options and suggestions for a healthier and more holistic way of living ...in the GREEN! Carol: If you haven't been affected by the economic crisis currently plaguing the American people, then you are one of the few. But like most of us, to one degree or another, we are feeling the side affects of a dis-eased ridden empire built off the backs of many and the continual pilferage of a few.... more. To help assist us with making the most of what materials we have, or for that matter, what crafts we create, Consumer Savvy Carol is here to offer her frugal minded suggestions and creative penny pinching tips. Check her out each week and let her save you a little money. So the Tampa Bay Rays are gearing up to play the Philadelphia Phillies in the first of seven games tomorrow night in Florida in the hopes of soon securing a final win at the 2008 World Championships when all is said and done. Not really being a baseball fan myself, the hype surrounding this phase of the games is all too distracting. I mean, everywhere I go in the Tri-State area, its Phillies this and Phillies that. I come into work and that is all people are ordering. Fifteen yards of Philly fleece here and 20 yards there; what are these people doing with all this 100% polyester stuff anyway? At some point I had to ask. Seems many recently secured tickets at unbelievable costs ($1,000 and up) for Game #2 being held right here in the City of Brotherly Love this Saturday. Others are making fun and funky paraphernalia for friends and family members who will be rooting from stadium seats while they sit snuggly at home in front of their screen televisions. From warm throws and fashionable head coverings, to comfy fanny seat cushions and wind resistant hoodies, no fan is planning to be without some form of protection as they root, root, root for their home team all the way to the BIG WIN. As for me, while baseball itself seems like a boring sport and quite UN-entertaining for me, I must admit, I do get a rise out of the fans hype and response good, bad or indifferent to the sport, players and teams they love the most. Though you won’t catch me screaming from the stadiums as another home run is hit, nor sporting a Phillies team shirt just to follow the crowd, you might see me in the last final minutes of the ninth inning waiting for your reaction from inside the walls of J&O Fabrics, as the calls for more Phillies fleece come pouring in.
