Fall Is Here. almost As a child I can remember the brisk breezes of fall blowing through my hair on my walk to school. Life was all about wool sweaters, corduroy jackets and new classes with new teachers. It is hard to think of fall with out thinking of school. However, there is one other event that comes to mind...the new TV season! I can clearly remember when we got our first color TV in 1965. Forever after that I would anxiously await the publishing of the Fall Preview TV Guide. For me both of these memories evoke thoughts of fashion. What are the stars on television wearing this season? I would start sewing my own clothes, using the pictures in the Fall Preview as inspiration. I simply adored corduroy, skirts, dresses, vests, pants, bags, and jackets OH MY! Today, I just cannot get enough flannel pajama bottoms! Suede Cloth Handbags also feed my creative need. Living on the East Coast the brilliant colors of the fall foliage are a treat to see each year. The breezes are not as blustery as I remember and I no longer get excited at the new fall TV line up. Still, surprisingly the autumn has a way of getting my creative juices flowing. Now there is a new generation to sew for. Saving money by making it yourself NEVER goes out of fashion. Oh my! Is it that time of the year already? Back to school makes me think of so many things. The early morning rush, making lunch (I hope I have one more juice box), kid free days, homework filled nights, permission slips to sign and scholastic book sales, to name a few! The line: I would send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils from Nora Ephrons You Got Mail pretty much sums up my feelings on the start of a new school year. New beginnings permeate the air! In the material world here at J&O Fabrics the new school year brings many must have projects to mind. Aside from covering school books, there are lots of bags to be made; handbags, tote bags, computer bags, and pencil cases. For the Love of FleeceHere at J&O Fabrics we get lots of new fabric shipments in daily. As a fabric junkie, I never cease to almost implode with excitement over new arrivals! Recently we got quite a large shipment of fleece into the store. The massive 100+ yard rolls where all leaning where ever there was room before being placed on the rack. As I walked around them, trying to get here or there, I could not help but indulge myself in a guilty pleasure of mine. Touching the brand new fleece! I felt a bit like Mr. Whipple squeezing his toilet paper. (if you even remember that) My goodness it does feel soft and luscious when its brand new. It made me think, how fleece never does feel quite the same after its been washed and worn. Fleece is just not as soft as it is when it is brand new. At least not to me! Don't get me wrong...it is still my first choice when it comes to cuddling up on the couch and getting all cozy with my cat. But I wondered, exactly what IS the realistic life of fleece. I mean how long does it stay so divinely soft? We asked some of our fellow tweets and the answer varied from forever to a few years. Depending upon the quality of the fleece you buy. No matter what, I still like it fresh, new and luscious So I am sending that old fleece blanket into the car for backup and starting a new one. I am going to treat myself to a new fleece blanket, and I am going to do it more often. Maybe you should consider doing this to treat yourself! Just in NEW YORK GIANTS & NEW YORK JETS FLEECE!!!

Dear Netfah, Forgive me for asking such a silly question, but I received on of those 'no sew' fleece throws for Christmas and I am really excited about creating a few for friends and family this winter but I am somewhat of a novice and am finding it challenging to decide which kind of fleece is the right kind to use. I went on line to purchase some for my project and was overwhelmed at the selection. At any rate, I wanted to know what the difference between polar fleece, winter fleece, poly-fleece, and micro-fleece really is, and which is better suited for the throws? Your input would be really helpful in guiding my decision. Thank you. -Too Many Choices, Boise IDDear Too Many Choices, Don't feel silly. With so many different manufacturers and advancements in the fabric textile industry, it's hard to keep up with the names and it can often times be quite confusing. In reference to the fleece you are interested in for your project, the best kind to look for would be a heavyweight polyester polar fleece. As opposed to the natural fleece derived from sheep's wool, synthetic poly fleece is softer, easier to care for, and much less expensive. Plus it is recycled from plastic bottles, making it a 'green' eco-friendly material. In regards to your question surrounding the variations between the four, hopefully my synopsis will make your shopping a little easier. There are three main weight categories of fleece which can be used for a throw, depending on how warm a blanket you desire. Micro-fleeces are the lightest and are best suited for the spring season. Medium weight fleece is the next in weight and is used to make a lot of outerwear and accessories geared for fall weather. It is similar to the weight of sweat pants. The heaviest fleece is called winter or polar fleece. Like most fleeces, polar fleece has an excellent weight-to-insulation ratio making it not only lightweight, but very warm. The material itself is created to pull away moisture yet retain body heat and dryness. And speaking of dryness, a good polyester fleece will be water resistant, so look for that quality when comparing if making throws geared to weather the elements of nature. With opening day less than 20 days away, and the cold weather still lingering in the midst, MLB (major league baseball) fans are eagerly gearing up for another round of submarine style pitches, sneaky stolen plates and out-the-park home run hitters from their favorite teams. With all the excitement of the spring season ahead, it’s easy to overlook some of the simple things that will make the long innings on hard stadium seats a little more comfortable.
It's root, root, root for the home team.
I don't care if they loose.
Whether you’re rooting from the plastic seats of the ball park or from the soft cushions of your favorite couch, our MLB fleeces can offer that extra bit of softness and warmth to go along with the rooting fans and the foot-long hotdogs that make a day at the park all worthwhile.
At J&O, we carry some of the coolest MBL fleece fabrics for our baseball fans nationwide. With a few yards of material and a little creativity, your team spirit can be expressed in the form of a simple logo filled craft project to carry or wear when the pitcher takes the mound.
If you’re a New York Mets fan, make great seat cushions for the ‘fanny’ in you. If you are a diehard Philadelphia Phillies fan, gather your family and lay a home-made fleece throw across your laps or around your shoulders to keep the nippy nights under the big lights a little more special. And if you’d rather be watching dare devil men speed around and around the Nascar track as screaming fans cheer on instead, but you have a knack for crafts too, then gather a yard or two from each teams fleece to make unique gifts for friends and loved ones that they will surely cherish even after the last game has been won.
Yes it's one, two, three strikes you’re out, at the ole ball game!
Out of fabric that is, if you wait too long.

Military blankets are a great gift for your loved ones at home & abroad this season. And hand-crafted blankets carrying the stars, stripes and emblems of the military branch they represent are especially nice not only during the holidays, but year round. You don't need to have any sewing skills to create one either. With J&O's wide selection of 100% poly-winterfleece and a pair of scissors, you can make a warm & lightweight blanket for that special someone, or even yourself. Just follow the easy step instructions below and watch your fabric turn into an armor of pride that they can keep warm under when they need it most. Step One: Come to J&O Fabrics and pick from a selection of Military fleece fabrics representing the teams you or your loved ones follow. Have a store employee cut the fabric into a 2-4yard length depending on the size of the individual who will be wrapped inside (or 1 yard for a little one). Step Two: Wash the fabric with cold water on gentle cycle, or hand wash. Any detergent will do. Lay fabric flat to dry.
Step Three: Lay fabric out on a large flat surface. Turn one of the shorter ends towards you and smooth out any wrinkles.
Step Four: Cut a fringe along one short side by making 3-inch deep straight cuts about a 1/2-1 inch apart.
Step Five: Tie a single knot at the base of each cut strip to complete the fringe along one side of the blanket.
Step Six: Turn the fleece to the other short side and smooth out the wrinkles. Make the same size cuts a 1/2-inch apart and then tie knots to match the other side.
Step Seven: Step back and pat yourself on the back. Your completed military no-sew fleece blanket is done! Give as a gift or keep for yourself. (NBA Fabric and this History of Basketball) It was in late 1891 when high school drop-out James Naismith was called by his superior to create a new indoor game that would be interesting, easy to learn, and easy to play in the winter as well as by artificial light. Naismith reflected on popular games of the day and the games from his childhood, and assembled the pieces that would become Basket Ball. Five years later, the first documented professional basketball game took place in the US. It was a wild time, with barnstorming teams, leagues that came and went, and men who could play for three teams in three leagues at the same time. It wouldn’t be for another 50 years before this competitive team sport would evolve into the NBA. As for the modest and humble Naismith, he would go on to earn four college degrees, but never to receive the full accolades’ for an invention that is now played by more people than any other game in the world. Here at J&O we rec ognize the lasting contribution Dr. Naismith’s indoctrination of this popular sport has had on the shaping of America’s culture. We send out a big “THANK YOU!”, as our show of appreciation for the sport that has basketball fans becoming J&O fans as well. With our bountiful selection of 45” cotton and 60” fleece fabric, you can sport your teams’ colors and mascots all the way to the finals and back again. Our 100% cotton novelty prints are great for everything from bed linens and quilts, to fan wear and accessories. Rep Allen “The Answer” Iverson’s team print from head to toe as you sleep dreaming of his multiple play-off steals. Stand out in your own fashionable Miami Heat fan ensemble complet e with trimmed b-ball cap at the next live game. For those of you who prefer to cheer from the comforts of your own home, look for our warm & lightweight poly/fleece NBA print fabrics to create custom throws and pillows for those exciting nights in front of the tube watching the Orlando Magics vs Phoenix Suns. Whoever you root for, however you express your team spirit, have fun doing it with J&O Fabrics’ NBA prints. See you at the games! Hey, that's an order. Anyway, around this time of year fleece seems to fly off the shelves here at J&O. What are people doing with it? Whatever they feel like, we guess. Fleece blankets make nice gifts and are easy to put together because there's not a lot of sewing involved. Just get yourself about 2 yards, bind the edges some way and you're all set. A customer in our store in New Jersey once asked "What other material can I use for a blanket besides fleece?" For those of you who enjoy arts and crafts but aren't that crafty, our pre-quilted fabrics can be made into a blanket in a flash. In solid colors and prints, some have one layer of cotton with batting, while others have two layers of cotton fabric with batting in the middle. Basically, the two sided ones are premade bedspreads sold by the yard and cheaper than fleece. Fleece is soft and oh-so warm. Sometimes when it gets cold in the store, us workers tie some of the remnants around our necks and 20 minutes later we're hot! If your interested in making blankets for your loved ones, try mixing our popular polar fleece with a quilted fabric. Here's some coordinating fleece and quilted fabrics for baby blankets to grown up bedspreads. Combine Bears Polar Fleece with Orange Circle Quilted Fabric Or combine pink fleece with pink quilted; tan fleece with tan quilted. Or do opposites, red quilted with blue fleece. For a child's blanket combine any of our children's quilted designs with a red or blue solid fleece. Oh, did we forget to mention our collection of fur???? J&O's faux Fur is also a warm and cozy material that can be made into a blanket. Did we forget to mention that? I guess we did, maybe another time. We're telling you J&O has sew many possibilities. Every now and then at J&O we get some strange orders and we say,"I wonder what this person is making?" How 'bout letting us know. What do you do with the fabric you order from J&O????????
