An essential part of the gear of every laptop is the carrying case. You can find some that are bulky and some that are sleek, but one thing they have in common is that they are drab. With this blog J&O offers an economical and stylish alternative to the usual laptop sleeves and cases with a fabric laptop sleeve. Using this idea you can make yourself a laptop sleeve with a velcro flap fit for a 15" laptop. Thanks to designspongeonline.com for the wonderful idea. First, gather your materials. These include a 3/4 yards each of two colors of felt, 3/4 yards double-sided fusbile interfacing, a package of round sticky Velcro dots, scissors, and iron.
Begin by laying one piece of felt flat and placing your laptop in the middle and cut out corners to creat a cross shape. Trim the flaps of felt so that they overlap each other about 2 inches. Use this piece as a template with which to repeat the process on the other piece of felt and the interfacing. Sandwich the interfacing between the two layers of felt and iron to fuse. After evening up the edegs with scissors you can adhere the Velcro dots where the edges overlap.

Gone are the days of creative thinking and imagination. As the shelves of our local toy stores fill with more and more electronic devises like PSP's, DS Systems, and the Wee, more and more parents are ditching their ancient arts and crafts supplies and investing in a future of artificial intelligence and mental over-stimulation for their little boys and girls. Some are spending money they don't have and encouraging a life of immediate gratification void of physical interaction, and wondering why their children seem so desensitized by life. But who says children don't like hand made toys anymore? And what child doesn't still get filled with pride and joy at the sight of a fantastically cool game, craft or toy they made all by themselves? It was less than a week ago that my 11 year old son and his friends found themselves home from school due to a passing snow storm that left several inches on our neighborhood lawns. Too cold to go out, and too bored to stay in, my son and his friends created countless mundane ways to compete on their electronic entertainment systems and revisit a continually disappointing cabinet of healthy snacks throughout the morning hours. Bearing witness to this modern atrosity, I gathered up my stash of fabrics, trims, crafts and other tid bit supplies and called the boys to the kitchen table for some good old fashion fun. Finger puppets would be the project of the afternoon, and with a little felt, fabric glue, plastic eyes, yarn and some great decorating stuff, I set the doubtful yet willing pre-teens off to create uniquely wonderful works of art for at least an hour or two of five finger fun. From a puppet that looks like their favorite entertainer, favorite animal, or that fabulous face in the mirror. And with that, I left three pre-teen children to their own device. The end result....some really cool finger puppets for three gloating boys who haven't forgotten how to have some good old fashion finance free fun ......without electrical interference. To create your own felt crafts like the finger puppet project mentioned above, check out the following family friendly websites: www.allfreecrafts.com or www.familyfun.com, and then visit us at https://www.jandofabrics.com/index.htm for our great selection of colorful felt fabric. Dear Netfah, We are in the planning stages of our school’s annual Christmas play here in Morristown, Tennessee and are in need of black material that we can use to act as a backdrop. The space we are trying to cover is pretty large (appx. 50’w x 20’ h) and we are having a hard time finding a light weight material that is also non-transparent. We saw your black felt on line and wondered if that was a recommended fabric for what we have in mind? -Jenny, Morristown TN Dear Jenny, Thank you for writing in with your inquiry. Surprisingly enough, we get this question often from small theatres and large production companies looking for the right fabric to create the right affect for their stage presentations. While craft felt is a great material for use as wall hangings and banners, and takes well to tacking and sewn on applications, the weight and thickness of the fabric poses a challenge when trying to hang and secure over a large area. You will do better with a lighter weight material that offers you the same benefits, plus additional softness and pliability. An alternative choice would be broadcloth or muslin. Both are usually made from 100% cotton and come in widths ranging from 45” to 108” wide. This is a plus when looking to cover a large area such as your backdrop. And at an average of $2-3 per yard, these options are economical as well. Because both the broadcloth and muslin fabrics are made with natural cotton fibers, they can be machine washed, offering quick and easy laundering with no piling or long drying times. Since you are looking for a black material, and muslin is usually only available in white or off-white, your best bet is the broadcloth. Available in an array of great colors, broadcloth is a wonderful fabric for not only your project needs, but for a wide range of craft ideas. **Yardage Tip**: To convert your feet into yards, first convert into inches. This will make it easier for both you and the employee cutting your material to get you the correct amount of fabric you require. Remember 12" per foot 3 feet per yard therefore,

January 2007Felt Possibilities
Many people associate the material felt with elementary school teaching tools or children's arts and crafts activities. Felt cuts neatly, sews easily and is machine washable and dryable, so it's understandable that felt would be a top choice to keep little inquisitive minds occupied. However, you must not underestimate the versatility of felt.
One of the oldest forms of fabric known to humankind, felt is a non-woven cloth of fibers worked into a tight dense mass by heat , moisture and pressure. Some stories mention that Noah's Ark was lined with felt. Originally lined with sheep's wool, due to the combination of continued trampling and urine from the animals, a felted carpet formed. Besides felts long standing history and the fact that it's older than dirt, are you aware of the many uses of felt? The practical uses for good quality felt are endless, just look around your house. For example; cover a game table, replace a lamp bottom, erase a chalkboard, wipe or polish metal, use it to absorb noise or make some kind of protective pad. Felt is used in automobiles, "felt tip pens", hats, lining of handbags and so much more. Our heavy-weight felt is made of 100% acrylic, 72 inches wide and only $4.98 a yard. Here at J&O we sell felt by the yard because small felt squares may not be large enough for every project undertaken. J&O gives you the choice of dividing your own felt up into whichever increments you like.
In addition to offering high quality felt, J&O not only stocks the basic colors like green, blue, red and yellow, we even stock unconventional colors such as antique gold, eggplant, smoke gray and french blue.
Think of the possibilities! Felt isn't just for child's play, get creative and put this age-old material to work. Do you have an unusual use for felt or even a practical use for felt that may not be well known? Share and let us know!To explore all of J&O's possibilities visit jofabrics.comJ&O Fabrics. . .
