 Every once and a while we receive letters and pics from our customers around the world who have found a great fabric treasure in between the pages and isles of our fabric store. One such customer is Ms. Barratt from Pennsylvania, USA. Ms. Barratt was in search of the perfect material for a friends baby shower. She wanted something colorful, something with a 'Beatles' theme, and something the baby-on-the-way could use. Well, she found it! And to no surprise, it was a hit with the mommy to be. Like many musicians and singers of the past, The Beatles have maintained their base of die hard fans long after their group dissipated and members past away. The memories from fans and those who love them most live on in memorabilia, music, live footage, books and even fabric. The kind of fabric that makes for cute crib sheets and colorful baby blankets like the ones Ms. Barratt made from our popular cotton panel. Ms Barratt only needed to be pointed down the isle of Rock-n-Roll greats before she stumbled on the perfect Beatles cotton novelty print for the special occasion. Sifting past psychedelic yellow submarine designs, all you need is love, and Beatles logo designs, Ms Barratt selected their 'All You Need is Love' Panel for her hand made baby blanket. Trimmed in a rainbow satin material with a baking of yellow stars, her colorful selection was enough to make any rainbow jealous.

 This past weekend, the island of Jamaica was swarming with supermodels, shutterbugs, fashion designers, international style mavericks, the media and an impressive list of celebs all wanting to be a part of this years annual Caribbean Fashion Week.
Presented by Pulse, one of the regions largest, most recognized, and internationally respected fashion and entertainment companies, CFW (Caribbean Fashion Week) has evolved from a fledgling event in 2001, to its current status as the premier event representing the marriage of a diversity of cultural and fashion influences.
Running for almost a full week and culminating with an invite only wrap party this past Monday night, the city of Kingston, Jamaica entertained over 50 designers from 25 countries as they showcased their collections for 2010 with a mix of cool cotton sheers, itsy bitsy teeny weeny flavorful bikinis, and shimmery metalic fabrics as intoxicating as the island itself. An impressive synergy of fashion, business and entertainment coupled with a line up of designers such as Deola Sagoe from Africa, Sushma Patel from India, Meiling from Trinidad, Nana Boateng from Ghana, and Britisher by way of Jamaica Sandra Kennedy, made this a show not soon to forget. And who would want to! With urban, indie and sub-culture style setting the pace for mainstream American fashions, Pulses Caribbean Fashion Week is about the most far reaching and strategically important fashion event in the region.

From ironing and making minor household repairs, to cooking and cleaning, these modern day SHEro's wear many hats in between climbing ambitious career ladders and running endless marathons for their loved ones. Here at J&O Fabrics, I am surrounded by an intimate group of abundantly talented women from diverse social and economic backgrounds, who not only possess the required skills and experience to help run one of the top fabric stores on the world wide web, but who pack under their belts the kind of crafty talent and creative mindset that motivates and stirs the artistic juices in all of us on a daily basis. Ranging in age from 20 well into their 50's, these humble servants of the Great Imagination are always finding new ways to revamp and revitalize even the most outdated chairs, window dressings, and garments; and the talent doesn't stop there. Every week our suppliers send us new fabric and material for our wonderful customers that even the most graceful of ladies find hard to resist, as the mere sound of the UPS guy sends us running to see what's come in. Designing new fashions and manifesting unique ideas into fruition is just part of the territory here at J&O Fabrics. It's almost impossible not to be inspired to try our hand at something new amongst the multitude of assorted bolts that make up the colorful walls of this mom & pop brick and martyr. Take for instance, Nydiadada. A lively and jovial mother of three, this seasoned woman with a youthful heart recently made all of us custom apron and dish towel sets for the holidays. As we each pulled our gift wrapped sets out with gleaming smiles on our faces and gracious thanks on our lips, we were delighted to discover that each apron looked even better than the next and at the end of it all, a beautiful array of colorful personalized kitchen attire emerged. From Judy's ' Chocolate Treats' apron to Netfah's ' Enkai's Children' set, Nydiadada created reflections of each of us on these cute terry cloth and novelty cotton crafts that would hold a place in our hearts for years to come. You too may be one of the many with a special gift for fashioning fabric and creating crafts that you and others enjoy. Such ideas like Nydiadada's aprons probably cross your mind from time to time as well. When it does, find a way to nurture it. Even if it's been done before by a hundred other people in a hundred other ways, no one can do it quite like you. They say many people are born originals but die as copies. Printed against a sky blue canvas on a soft 100% cotton fabric, ‘Friendship Beach’ carries with it not only a 15 ¾”h x 7 ¾” v repeat, but all the internal peace and tranquility one could dream of in the days of innocence and youth. For instance, take Mary and Marie, better known by the staff at J&O Fabrics as simply M & M. These two lively and lovely 'seasoned' women have been tapping into their creative feminine juices for many years now, and have no intention of stopping. Creating cute and fun crafts as a way of nurturing their Goddess given talents and fulfilling their philanthropic side is what feeds their spirit. And of course our selection of diverse and funky fabrics found within the walls of our brick and mortar might have a little something to do with their source of inspiration as well. Novelty prints, calico, African fabrics....each visit they make is fun for us all, and the little craft gifts they leave behind are cherished memoirs that leave smiles on our faces for days to come.
