"The Raving Reds of the 2008 Oscars!"

The carpet wasn’t the only one wearing red at this years’ Oscar’s. Notable film and television favorites came dressed to impress in what some say was just what the Oscar’s needed to jolt the dreary energy of a lingering winter, and the weighted residue from the pending writer’s strike.
The lovely ladies of stage and screen came out to warm the blood of men and stimulate the senses of all in their one of a kind, custom made and right of the runway designer gowns from such fashion icons as Valentino, Galliano, Escada and Kevan Hall. From the legendary Ruby Dee , suited in a ruby red satin gown complete with rhinestone belt, to new comer Miley Cyrus, in a red chiffon bow backed number, it was clear that red was the undisputed color of choice, and these diva’s worked their fashionable garments as only they could.

Actress Helen Mirren donned a garnet satin dress, while Anne Hathaway adorned herself in a crimson red satin one shoulder by Marchesa complete with rosette embellishment. Kathy Heigl looked liked she walked right off the set of a Harlequin romance in a beautiful silk georgette column dress with a draped and pleated bodice. The red affair was completed with a haute couture red silk taffeta bustier gown by Galliano that was strutted in true runway style by none other than super model icon herself, Heidi Klum.

With prom season right around the corner, and J&O right at your fingertips, you can take a little bit of creative inspiration and glamour from the red carpet today!

SAG Fabric Fashions Part II: Designer Fabric

If it was curiosity that killed the cat, then it was definitely satisfaction that brought it back.

While gossip columnists, tabloid reporters and inquiring minds were eager to discover whether or not another bundle of joy was patiently waiting to be revealed from behind the free flowing vintage gown Angelina’s wore, we at J&O were waiting to find out the name of that beautiful fabric that she chose to garment herself in for the annual red carpet affair.

Our curiosity was satisfied when it was revealed that her designer piece was a mahogany and slate colored, tie-dyed, paneled chiffon. And it looked great!

True to the nature of chiffon, the material created a fluid, free flowing look to the full length gown. Its fibers offered the perfect canvas for the warm earth toned dyes, and added a slight overlay of shimmer and texture atop a muted opaque foundation . Traditionally used for such formal occasions, chiffon carries a fabulous drape and offers a sexy yet modest look for its wearer.

It seems Angelina wasn’t the only celebrity who opted for this beautiful and versatile fabric. Lisa Rinna was a woman dressed to prowl the red carpet in her wispy black and white leopard print chiffon gown. Her low, halter cut neckline and open back dress created a sensual touch to a modestly draped hemline. Volumes of fabric flowed wild and free as she strutted and posed for the cameras that night.

Finally, we saw Kate Hudson in her full length avian inspired gown. Her strapless dress was designed with a soft plumaged breast line and volumous layers of a sheer pink and lavender printed chiffon that cascaded into a train as she seemed to float across the stage.

Once again, this elegant material created a glamorous look for an affair that is nothing less.

The handsomely tailored men who accompanied each of these actresses on the carpet or on stage, seemed to create the perfect backdrop for bringing out the sensuous and feminine qualities that the lovely ladies and their chiffons brought to the event.

And you don't have to travel to Hollywood or NY to find this great material. The lovely chiffon fabrics premiering on the red carpet can be found right here at J&O. Available in silk, polyester, cotton, rayon or nylon, our selection of naturals and synthetics offer you an array of looks and feels. Dye them, decorate them, mold and shape them to create just the design you are going for. Make your own red carpet fashion today!

SAG Fashion Fabrics: "And The Award Goes To?"

Some of us set the date well in advance, some of us stumbled on it accidently, while the remainder of us missed it all together and played catch up this morning as newscasters, gossip columns and fashionistas far and wide commented and critiqued the yards of designer fabrics that strutted their stuff on the red carpet hoping to capture the attention of designers and seamstresses alike.

Molded, shaped and married into fashionable creations with both artistic precision and stylish flair, wonderful pieces of material hung elegantly on hanger like bodies, clung embracingly around hour glass figures and draped sensuously on glamorous forms that struck a pose every two minutes for millions of Americans to note and admire.

The Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, aka SAG Awards, may be embraced as one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the entertainment industry, an opportunity for actors and actresses alike to be honored and acknowledged by their own peers on their respective crafts.

For people like us who love creating and working with fabric, it is more importantly, an opportunity for us to do the same. Watching the garments parade down the royal red carpet allows us to view and RE-view the wonderful end results of other beautifully imaginative artists and crafters.
Blue seemed to be a popular color this year, gracing such notable actresses as Kyra Sedgwick and newcomer Niki Blonsky. Kyra adorned cobalt colored silk crepe with chantilly lace, while Niki embraced her more fluid side in royal blue taffeta.

A hot shade of pink silk organza graced January Jones from top to bottom, as the darker side of green poured lavishly into layers of elegant silk and satin material that shined vibrantly on Diane Lane.

Ashley kept it simple in a vintage bead trimmed white chiffon gown, as Viggio played handsome don in a dark blue pinstripe suit, complete with scarlet vest.

It never ceases to amaze me the way we bring life to this amazing palate of beautiful color and fabric…or is it the other way around?

With so many textures, shades, patterns and prints to choose from, the sky is the limit to your creative imagination.

If you had to honor one fabric with your own award for best performance, which one would it be? The nominees are all right here on our website. Place your vote today!

Design Your Own Fabric!

So you’ve been on our site and looked at 1, 10 or maybe even 100 prints from our vast array of assorted fabrics. You’ve seen some you liked, some you loved and some you could do without. And more than likely, somewhere in between our novelties and decorative fabrics, you caught yourself picturing what a print from the wells of your creative imagination would look like.

Maybe you have a little girl who is turning five, and for her birthday she tells you that she wants to be an astronaut when she grows up. You go out and buy the glow-in -the-dark stars and a mystical space sounds tape to make her night life more adventurous. You collect globes, spaceships and Star Trek figurines in hopes to nurture her passion (until a new one comes along a six), but what she really wants is an image of a little girl that looks like her, steering that infamous space shuttle into the unknown galaxy of ‘Little Hannah’. So you search for the perfect fabric to make the curtains and bedding that would send your girl to the moon with excitement, only to find your search is in vain.

In disappointment you shut down your computer, put away the phone book and call off the search; wishing that a magic Genie would come along with the exact print image, in the exact favorite colors and the exact weight that you want so desperately. And while the he is at it, maybe he can create a printed fabric bearing all the characteristics and personality traits of a 1942 Pisces as well. I mean, that was the year you were born, and everyone knows Pisces are the best Zodiac sign of them all.

Well, your wish is our command!

If you could wish for 3 unique-one-of-a-kind-nobody-has-a-more-creative-imagination-than-you prints, what would they be? Hot Latina Pin-up Girls, TV shows from the 70’s, Tabby Cats and Hound Dogs playing cards? You can see some patterns like this in our Retro Fabric section.

We’d like to hear from you, so email us back or reply to this post with your crazy and not so crazy print ideas…you never know what wishes the J&O Genie may grant you!

Bonetti: J & O's Most Luxurious Designer Fabric

Occasionally, fabrics that are called classic are really just outdated, and fabrics qualified as "modern" may have overbearing designs. Unlike either of those possibilities, Bonetti Velvet Flock Linen is a fabric that both modern and classic in the best senses of those words.

Bonetti has a classic design in the sense of timeless elegance. It would be difficult to imagine a time when this design fabric would be considered anything less than beautiful. The timeless quality of Bonetti is also the key to understanding its modernity. This is a decorator fabric that - though it possess a classic design - can seemingly adapt to any fabric trends.

The very design of Bonetti is an intriguing combination of two very disparate elements: velvet and linen. While velvet has always been considered a sumptuous fabric of the highest order, linen has a decidedly more rustic appeal. Nevertheless, Bonetti successfully combines those qualities into one incredible fabric.

This most luxurious designer fabric is particularly suited to more formal areas of your home such as living rooms, dining rooms, studies, libraries and offices. However, it will look splendid in kitchens, family rooms and in other more casual surroundings. Furthermore, rather than detracting from your furniture Bonetti will accent and highlight it.
