Although the Big Twelve Conference was officially created in 1994, its roots go back much further to 1907, the year in which the Big Eight Conference was formed. After many schools came and went, the Big Eight reached its final form in 1958: Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. In 1994, the Big Eight Conference merged with four Texas schools from the defunct Southwest Conference to form the Big Twelve. The Pac-10 first came into existence as the Pacific Coast Conference. Conference play commenced in 1916 with four teams. Over the next decade more schools would join, and by the time UCLA joined the conference in 1928 ten teams were apart of the Pacific Coast Conference. After a series of scandals at several conference schools, the Pacific Coast Conference was dissolved. In its place the Athletic Association of Western Universities with four members: California, Stanford, UCLA and USC and Washington. After the addition of Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State over the next few years, the conference's name was changed to the Pacific-8 Conference. When Arizona and Arizona State joined the conference in 1978, the Pac-10 was born. The Pac-10 has long been one of the elite conferences in the country and has accumulated 251 team national championships in men's sports and 100 titles in women's sports. The Atlantic Coast Conference came into existence on June 14, 1953 and is one of the older athletic conferences of college sports. While the ACC sponsors twenty Division I sports, its main success has been in basketball where teams from the conference have won 10 national championships. The ACC also has a proud history in other sports, its teams having been voted national champions in football five times. In all, ACC universities have won 102 national championships. The Big Ten is the oldest collegiate athletics conference in the country. Founded in 1896 and first known as the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives, it originally consisted of seven schools. In 1899 Indiana joined and the conference was first referred to as the Big Nine. Then, in 1917 Michigan rejoined the conference after a nine year absence and the first references were made to the Big Ten. In 1946, the University of Chicago withdrew from the conference, which was once again known as the Big Nine. However, in 1950 Michigan State joined and the conference reverted to the name by which it has been known ever since: The Big Ten. Interestingly enough, during all of these changes the conference was still officially named the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives. It wasn't until 1987 that the name Big Ten was formally adopted. This name remained even after Penn State joined the conference in 1990. The Big Ten teams are:
