Most Impressive First Sewing Machine Project

We asked:

HEY!

What’s the first thing you ever made

on a sewing machine?

Dori said:

“A mini UPS uniform for my infant son

out of one of my husbands shirts :)

We said: WOW That’s adorable!

Dori’s husband works for UPS and of course Kevin, only 18mths old, wanted to be just like Daddy! Problem was Mommy had no clue how to sew. Dori’s Mom was happy to show her how to reconstruct one of Dad’s shirts with a pattern, but Dori was left on her own to sew it on the machine. Her Mom told her: “if you don’t understand the directions you should just read them over and over again until you get it”. Apparently she “got it” and ten years later she is still making costumes for holidays and special occasions. Pretty impressive for someone who never sewed on a machine before! Here are a few more of her creations.

mad·ness

–noun

1. the state of being mad; insanity.

2. senseless folly: It is sheer madness to speak as you do.

3. frenzy; rage.

4. intense excitement or enthusiasm.

How would you define madness? In just a few days we’ll all be subject to the craziness that is March Madness, the NCAA’s college basketball tournament that is one of the most exciting events in American sports. March Madness is a single elimination tournament featuring 65 college basketball teams. The madness even precedes the tournament as teams vie for entry or position during their conference tournaments. Once in, each team faces a gauntlet of games before reaching the ultimate destination: the Championship Game.

What is a UFAC classification?

Among the many acronyms and symbols used in the fabric industry an important one to know about is UFAC, which stands for Upholstered Furniture Action Council. This organization was founded in 1978 as a coalition of fabric manufacturers and retailers to ensure that upholstered furniture was more resistant to ignition from smoldering cigarettes. UFAC does not manufacture any upholstered goods.

There are two UFAC ratings: 1 and 2. UFAC class 1 means that a fabric meets the flammability criteria of the UFAC when in contact with polyurethane foam. UFAC class 2 fabrics are those that do not meet the flammability criteria and must be used in conjunction with a flame retardant material between the fabric and the foam.

How is the durability of fabric determined?

On certain fabrics on our and other web sites you might see that durability or abrasion resistance of the fabric is listed. Various methods are used to determine the durability of a fabric. Two of the most common are the Martindale method and the Wyzenbeek method. What is involved in these tests and how do they help you determine if a fabric is durable enough for you?

While element such as wall decorations, window treatments, and other accessories are important in this blog we will focus on how upholstery fabrics can brighten a room’s decor.

Choosing the right fabric requires taken into account not only the color of the fabric but the texture as well. For instance chenille fabrics are soft and tend to have a warm, inviting texture, while bark cloths are stiffer and more vibrant in appearance. Depending on what your aim is you can find a fabric with both the right color and texture.

Dear Netfah: Cleaning & Care of Outdoor Upholstery Fabric

Dear Netfah,

Every Memorial Day, my family has a big BBQ at our house. And every year, more and more friends and family attend. This year, my husband and I are celebrating our 10th Anniversary run for this event, and we want to do it in style. With food and entertainment a high priority on our list, the last thing I need to worry about is the condition of my outdoor patio cushions. They’re a 100% Acrylic Penny Stripe and I got them several years ago. I usually keep the cushions in a cool shed during the winter, and they’ve kept well. But when I pulled them out they had some remains of the days if you will, that showed their age and usage. They just need a little ‘pick-me-up’ without me having to launder the shells. So my question to you today is, how do I clean my darling but dusty lounge chairs in time for the big BBQ?
