Ask Netfah: Back vs. Unbacked Suede Upholstery

Dear Netfah,

I am shopping for material to reupholster my couch with and I was wondering what the difference  was between the backed upholstery weight ultra-suede and the unbacked version.

Sam Edward II,  W’Boro-NJ

Dear Sam,

While both suedes are suitable for upholstery projects, the backed upholstery weight ultra-suede fabric is made primarily for upholstering high usage furniture, as opposed to the unbacked ultra-suede material which is used more so for home accent pieces, low usage furnishings, curtains, lamps, and the like. The thin layer of knitted backing found on your upholstery weighted ultra-suede gives the fabric the kind of added durability required for its project use. Without it, the material may have too much ‘give’ when you really need it to ‘hug’ the cushion or object you are securing it to. This may not be as much of an issue when upholstering car headliners or furnishings with low usage. In those instances, use of the unbacked ultrasuede upholstery is fine. A general rule of thumb to keep in mind when it comes to determining the right (or face) side from the back is that the face will have more color.
