It was the winter of 1955 when the late Carl Perkins played a dance and noticed a couple dancing near the stage. The girl was gorgeous, he thought, and the boy wore blue suede shoes. As they danced the boy cautioned his date "don't step on my suedes." Perkins was bewildered that a guy would value shoes over a beautiful girl.
Later that night, Perkins was struck with an idea for a song based on that incident. He quickly grabbed a brown paper potato sack and wrote the song down, writing the title out as "Blue Swade, S-W-A-D-E". "I couldn't even spell it right," he has said. And this is the origin of the famous rock-n-roll tune, “Blue Suede Shoes".
Here at J&O not only do we carry the blue suede that made the shoes so popular, we carry over 50 tasty & colorful shades of ultrasuedes to bring your next project to life. From Creamy Coffee to Crocodile Brown, and every color in between, we are sure to have what you are looking for.
With this synthetic ultra-microfiber fabric, you don't have to worry while out on the dancefloor either. No spilled drink or clumsy foot will mess this fabric up. Our ultrasuede looks and feels like natural suede, but it is resistant to stains and discoloration. It can be machine washed, and because it is a non-woven fabric, it will not pull or fray. For our animal activists and vegetarians, it is also free from any animal products.
So go ahead and make those cute diva hand bags with fun solid colors like Bubblegum Pink and Lipstick Red. Create unique chair covers with our fashionable Ultra suede prints like Retro Square Cream and Circuit Natural. Use our ultrasuede for footwear, interior decorating, vehicle upholstery, and so much more. Whatever the stretch of your imagination, have fun and let your creative side go wild. And if you're really in the mood, add a new color to those blue suede shoes!
Well, did you watch the November 4th airing of Extreme Makeover Home Edition: Marrero Family as suggested in our September blog? No? Then let me tell you what you missed. The J&O family was front in center to critique the show’s designer’s use of the fabulous fabrics they selected to decorate & beautify the new South Jersey home. We watched along with thousands of Americans as they moved that bus and swung open the front door into their modernized oasis.
Yards of our Camel Cotton dressed the front sitting area, offering softness to the rich chocolate colored leather seating. The same soft & flowing material could be seen garnishing the dining room’s windows as well, creating a reserved yet inviting stream of sunlight into the already brightly lit area. You can view our cotton twill, canvas and duck cloth fabrics.
While still in the dining room, we can see how the Extreme Makeover Home Edition’s design team made use of J&O’s beautiful White Suede, as they wrapped the cushioning of all 8 dining chairs to create a simple yet luxurious feel to the family’s home. Serving and entertaining friends and family at this table is sure to make them want to stay for more. You can view our upholstery fabric and suede cloth fabric.
For a more sleek look & feel, EMHE used our Wine Velvet fabric for the living room. Hung from ceiling to floor, they provided a nice richness against the cream colored furniture. In the spring & summer, they can be pulled to the side to offer in plenty of light and fresh air. In the colder months, they will offer an extra line of fashionable protection against the blustering winds that blow. You can view our velvet and ultra suede fabric.
Finally, we enter into the family room where we find our brightly colored Tangerine Satin finished fabric hung from ceiling to floor. This drapery accents the British Imperial Seal printed wallpaper that makes this room especially unique. You can see all the colors of our Satin fabric.
So there you have it. It's always interesting to see the many different ways a few yardages of material can transform a piece of furniture or a window frame into a beautiful space for living.
The J&O Family gives these decorators and interior designers a satisfactory score. But we’re curious to hear from you. If you watched the airing of the Marrero Family’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition and want to comment, please do so. We’d love to hear from you!
It was in late 1891 when high school drop-out James Naismith was called by his superior to create a new indoor game that would be interesting, easy to learn, and easy to play in the winter as well as by artificial light. Naismith reflected on popular games of the day and the games from his childhood, and assembled the pieces that would become Basket Ball. Five years later, the first documented professional basketball game took place in the US. It was a wild time, with barnstorming teams, leagues that came and went, and men who could play for three teams in three leagues at the same time. It wouldn’t be for another 50 years before this competitive team sport would evolve into the NBA.
As for the modest and humble Naismith, he would go on to earn four college degrees, but never to receive the full accolades’ for an invention that is now played by more people than any other game in the world. Here at J&O we recognize the lasting contribution Dr. Naismith’s indoctrination of this popular sport has had on the shaping of America’s culture. We send out a big “THANK YOU!”, as our show of appreciation for the sport that has basketball fans becoming J&O fans as well. With our bountiful selection of 45” cotton and 60” fleece fabric, you can sport your teams’ colors and mascots all the way to the finals and back again. Our 100% cotton novelty prints are great for everything from bed linens and quilts, to fan wear and accessories. Rep Allen “The Answer” Iverson’s team print from head to toe as you sleep dreaming of his multiple play-off steals. Stand out in your own fashionable Miami Heat fan ensemble complete with trimmed b-ball cap at the next live game. For those of you who prefer to cheer from the comforts of your own home, look for our warm & lightweight poly/fleece NBA print fabrics to create custom throws and pillows for those exciting nights in front of the tube watching the Orlando Magics vs Phoenix Suns. Whoever you root for, however you express your team spirit, have fun doing it with J&O Fabrics’ NBA prints. See you at the games!
By now you should be gently versed in not only the art of wrapping your hair (see our article on geles), but also with the many names used to describe the ancient and modern form of wrapping your body as well (see our article on sarongs).
Now we are going to give you a crash course in the how to of creating that perfect sarong for dress or leisure. These quick and easy instructions will have you crafting your own personal style from your closet of fabric treasures in no time. Remember, it is our differences that make us unique. So let yourself be creative. At J&O, we strive to deliver an array of designs & prints to match your individual tastes. Many in 45-60" length . Let's get started.
Step One: Step in front of your sarong.
Step Two: Pull the ends evenly forward and let the fabric sit on your waist. If you have a fringed sarong, let the unfringed end be the one you pull around your waist.
Step Three : Tie ends around your waist and secure a knot on your hip.
Viola, your done! Not too bad right? Now let's try another look.
This one is a fashionable substitute for the beach bunny in you. From the sea, to dinner by the sea, this versitile look is just what the on-the-go woman needs.
Step One: Pull the ends of the sarong forward so that the material lies flat across your upper back. Keep ends even in length.
Step Two: Gather ends and tie once across your bust. Pull gently to secure. If you are going for more of a wrapped look, then continue around until you are close to the end of one side of the fabric. Keep enough free to either tie or tuck .
Step Three: Bring ends up and over your shoulders or simply secure around your chest as noted in the diagram. The second option mirrors the steps taken in securing your waist sarong.
Step Four: Tie behind your neck & knot once if desired or tie around your chest in the front or on the side to obtain the desired look.
Once your dress sarong is complete, accessorize as you seem fit. Dress it up with heels and jewlery for a night on the town, or dress it down with flip flops and a sun-hat for fun in the sun. And the versitility doesn't stop here. Use that same fabric to wrap your hair, create a babies sling to wear across your body, use it as a shawl, a tablecloth, an accent for your couch, even tie up your belongings in it and use it as a carry bag ....bohemian style! Throw it in the wash at the end of your journey for a brand new start the next day.

Blankets are a great gift for your college or pro football fanatic this season. And hand-crafted blankets carrying the name and mascot of thier favorite team are especially cool. You don't need to have any sewing skills to create one either.
With J & O's wide selection of 100% poly-winterfleece and a pair of scissors, you can make a warm & lightweight blanket for your friends, family, team-mates, or even yourself. Just follow the easy step instructions below and watch your fabric turn into an armor of pride to keep warm under during those windy season games.
Step One:
Come to J&O Fabrics and pick from a selection of College & NFL fleece fabrics representing the teams you or your loved ones follow. Have a store employee cut the fabric into a 2-4yard length depending on the size of the individual who will be wrapped inside.
Step Two:
Wash the fabric with cold water on gentle cycle, or hand wash. Any detergent will do. Lay fabric flat to dry.
Step Three:
Lay fabric out on a large flat surface. Turn one of the shorter ends towards you and smooth out any wrinkles.
Step Four:
Cut a fringe along one short side by making 3-inch deep straight cuts about a 1/2-1 inch apart.
Step Five:
Tie a single knot at the base of each cut strip to complete the fringe along one side of the blanket.
Step Six:
Turn the fleece to the other short side and smooth out the wrinkles. Make the same size cuts a 1/2-inch apart and then tie knots to match the other side.
Step Seven:
Step back and pat yourself on the back. Your completed college / pro football no-sew fleece blanket is done! Give as a gift or keep for yourself.
