The Perfect Decorator Fabrics for Your Antiques

Going into an antiques store always raises the expectation of finding something spectacular for a great price. Besides the adventure of it, there is another allure to antiques and antique stores; the back story of the pieces, the cramped spaces overflowing with objects redolent of age and history, the images of how certain items would look in our homes. And if you find a piece that you like, you consider yourself very fortunate indeed.

Unfortunately though, purchasing antiques often involves restoration work that robs time from what we would rather be doing, namely, coordinating the item or items with what we already have. One of the concerns which can easily become complicated and time consuming is the selection of the right fabric for decoration or upholstery. The frustration of this process can be greatly alleviated by browsing our amazing stock of decorative and upholstery fabrics.

The following fabrics are some highlights of our selection. You will notice that they have an aged look reminiscent of fine antiques and should go wonderfully with your items.

Phantom Flower (che00028) is a prized example of how a fabric can match and coddle your antiques, whether upholstering them or decorating around them. This supple chenille fabric has an antique-looking design of faded flowers in ornate vases that will harmonize beautifully with wood furniture.

Quilted Garden and Mariposa upholsteries (fhu00020 & nup00007, respectively) are marvelous fabrics to match your antiques. Quilted Garden is a serene, breezy upholstery that will allow your antiques to take center stage while providing body to your decor. Mariposa, on the other hand, is a delightfully elegant fabric which doesn't take itself too seriously. Its color is reminiscent of cream sherry or Irish cream and would look gorgeous in libraries, drawing rooms, living rooms or offices, especially when combined with darker woods.

Illumination Paisley Upholstery (uph00037) is an entrancing designer fabric with a decadent, fin de siècle style. This upholstery is more formal and will enhance the decor of living and dining rooms.

Italian Garden Floral Tapestry (flt00017) is another aristocratic decorator fabric. Antiques upholstered with this fabric will look much more elegant and refined.

Nevertheless, it could be that you do not wish to re-upholster your antiques but instead decorate around them. To this end we present two antique-looking decorative weight fabrics. First, there is Indian Elephants (nov00009); this fabric has a rich burgundy background decorated with elephants and their masters. Antique Scroll (flo00205) has a deep black background printed with a golden scroll design. It is a decorative fabric of great beauty and substance and will undoubtedly make an impact on your home decor.

Although the main adventure may be in hunting for antique furnishings, finding the right fabric is no less important as it can highlight your pieces or detract from them. So take a little time to browse our wonderful decorator fabrics and discover how the right fabric can enhance your antiques.*

The Finest Paisley Decorator Fabrics

The popularity of paisley has lasted well over a century. In comparison with other once popular fashion trends, the longevity of paisley is remarkable.

The paisley pattern has existed for thousands of years. It especially flourished in India in many different art forms. From there it was imported to England, where the pattern quickly became fashionable for use in shawls.

Many towns and cities in the British Empire began to produce paisley patterned shawls to satisfy the public. One of these centers of production was the Scottish town of Paisley, which has been ensured a place in history by lending its name to the intricate pattern. Garments produced in this particular town bore the tear drop design that has become synonymous with paisley.

The paisley patterns we have listed under this category are suitable for drapes, bed sheets, blankets, garments, lampshades and upholstery for light-usage furniture.

Many of our paisleys have an antique look. Two examples of this are Blue/Red Paisley (bca00008) and Chevalier Paisley (bca00017). The former has a quasi mystical design infused with coruscating colors reminiscent of the hushed intensity of late-Medieval paintings. Chevalier is a much starker print that evokes the austere, almost penitent beauty of the Medieval castle Krak des Chevaliers. The striking simplicity of this paisley allows it to coordinate with virtually any decor, especially that of home libraries or offices. Saxony Baroque Paisley (bca00018) is another ornate fabric that deserves your attention.

Clifton Knolls Paisley (bca000312) is an exquisite decorator fabric. This dignified textile looks wonderful in formal dining rooms and living rooms, especially when combined with cherrywood furniture.

Paisley also has a less formal side, as evidenced by the trippy Delicate Acid Paisley (bca00006). Here you have a sun-drenched, psychedelic fabric that channels the Summer of Love. You won't find many fabrics that have such a retro vibe. Imagine all the uses you could give Delicate Acid: shirts, jackets, skirts, purses and handbags would look great in this fabric! If you like Delicate Acid then you'll also enjoy Mykonos Retro Paisley (bca000310) and Savage Paisley Floral (bca00007).

Finally, if you are interested in re-upholstering your furniture, there is a beautiful upholstery fabric for you to consider. Pearl Paisley Upholstery (reu00036) has a strange, otherworldly design that seems to look both to the future and to the past. It has a decadent, "fin-de-siècle" style as well as a futuristic and streamlined side.

The Effortless Elegance of Toile Fabric

Toile has long been considered a highly formal fabric, thought to grace only the most elegant estates. But don’t let that prevent you from investigating J&O Fabrics’ selection of high quality toile. Our designer toile fabrics come in cotton novelty and decorative weights. In this blog we are going to focus on decorative weight toile fabric.

Most toile fabric is only in two colors which lends the fabric a timeless quality. In fact, most scenes depicted on toile fabrics are meant to tell stories from olden times: from peasants working the fields to heroes of bygone days. A fine example of our historical toile fabric is Coy Shepherdess (toi00024). Her demure look will enchant your guests and breathe life into your home.
Coy Shepherdess Toile: Blue

In recent years it has been seen that toile can be used in a more casual context. Our toile can be used, for instance, to make bed sheets, garments, lampshades, pillows, purses, robes, scarves and slippers. A wonderful toile for these uses would be Giardino di oblivion (toi00015). This limpid, breezy toile is the perfect fabric for all of your craft and decorative projects.
Giardino di oblivion: Floral Toile

Toile is also nicely suited to decorating kitchens and large rooms. Light-colored toile can make even a small room seem larger; the gossamer appearance of Abandoned Village: Moss (toi00021) will achieve this effect. On the other hand, darker prints harmonize wonderfully with antiques and add substance to the decor of a room; Canton Garden: Wine (ord00001) is such a print.

Our toile decorator fabric also makes a wonderful companion to shabby chic rooms, importing a sense of age and grace difficult to achieve by most other means. Central Park Toile Lime (toi00052) is the perfect fabric for such casual decorating.

Browse our Toile Decorative fabric section and let your eyes and imagination roam. Our staff will be happy to show you how easy it is to decorate with the effortless elegance of toile fabric.*

Decorator Plaid Fabrics for All Seasons

Plaids have been in use for thousands of years and are particularly associated with Scotland and her culture, where the pattern is known as Tartan.

Eventually, some patterns gained such popularity in certain areas of Scotland that they became known by that region’s name. Other Tartans were named for the individuals who commissioned
them.

With J & O Fabrics you can now enjoy the look of plaid without commissioning a pattern or belonging to a Scottish clan. Following are descriptions of only a fraction of the plaid decorative fabrics we carry, so once you are done reading feel free to browse further.

Ariel Plaids in Blue and Green (pla00030 & pla00097 respectively) are classic prints in beautiful colors. Ariel Blue has light, summery colors that will brighten up kitchens and smaller areas. Ariel Green is reminiscent of the rugged Scottish coast and has a bucolic charm that looks wonderful in any setting.

Blair Modern Colorful Plaid (pla00041) is a distinctive decorative fabric. Although it has plenty of personality it will not overwhelm its surroundings, but rather draw out the color in a room. Curtains, valances and other draperies will look much nicer with the flair that Blair Modern offers.
Blair Modern Colorful Plaid

Burberry Plaid
(bbc00004) does not need much of an introduction, as this chic fabric can be seen on handbags, garments and many other items all over the world. Now it can decorate your home in any way you’d like. Draperies, lampshades, bed sheets and much more can be enhanced by the use of this sumptuous designer fabric.
Burberry Plaid

Out of our large array of plaid fabrics, the Burgess series must be among the most beautiful, elegant and refined. Indeed it is one of the nicest fabrics of any sort carried in our store. Burgess Red/Gold (pla00006) is reminiscent of a fine scotch, aged to perfection. Burgess Blue/Green (pla00002) exudes the essence of Scotland’s picturesque coasts, bathed in foam and mist from the sea.

Besides decorative projects these plaid fabrics can be used to make garments such as “lumberjack” shirts, pants, skirts, vests and so on. Use them to make blankets, bed sheets, lampshades or pillow covers. With J & O you can sew with the finest plaids this side of the Atlantic!*

Designer Elephant Upholstery Fabric

Few animals inspire us with as much fascination as elephants. Elephant behavior has been a source of proverbs and metaphors for as long as humans have observed them. Their proverbially prodigious memories have served to inspire stories, refrains and maxims from many different countries and cultures.

Elephants have also been an inspiration to fabrics designers. The dignity of elephants is a quality which translates particularly well into upholstery fabric. That is why we carry a selection of designer elephant upholstery fabrics.

Grand Elephants Tapestry (tap00028) is a stately fabric with an exotic, far eastern design showing these magnificent animals encircled by ornate scrolls.
Grand Elephants

Elephants in India (tap00029) shows regal pachyderms being pampered by their caretakers on the grounds of a royal palace. Meghalaya Palace (tap000104) is a beautiful tapestry with an age-worn design. The past splendors of the ruler of this domain can be seen in the exquisite depictions of elephants decorating the walls.

Morocco (tap00094) is another entrancing tapestry fabric with elephants and exotic symbols on a natural, tan-like background.

Indian Elephants (nov00009) is a luxurious, lighter-weight decorative fabric with a burgundy background. This particular fabric is less suited to upholstering than the aforementioned examples. It is a decorative fabric intended for uses such as draperies, pillows and lampshades. Even handbags and other accessories can be created from this designer fabric.

If you have enjoyed these fabrics, you might also like to browse the fabric categories under which they are listed; the first four tapestries can be found -along with many others- in the Novelty Tapestry section of jandofabrics.com. The last fabric can be found under the category of Novelty Decorative Designs. Regardless of which example you ultimately choose, you will find that these timeless decorator fabrics are the perfect compliments to your home decor.*

Ushering in the New NFL Season with Fabric

According to Greek legend Demeter, goddess of the Earth, bore a daughter named Persephone. One day Persephone was abducted by Hades to become his queen. The anguished search by Demeter eventually led to Persephone being returned to her mother under the condition that she be Hades queen for four months each year. When Demeter and Persephone were together the Earth flourished, but when Persephone returned to the underworld there were four months of barrenness. Thus the seasons came to be.

This tragic saga has a modern parallel: when the NFL season approaches, the Earth blossoms with life. The months from Draft Day to the Super Bowl are times of hope and joy, with projections, predictions as well as tidings and portents of playoff glory! All of this joy disappears, however, during the long months when there is no football as the men of the world wander -just as Demeter had done- distraught and aimless through streets where no sun shines, and so the world becomes dark and barren.

What can be done? To save yourself from being overly distressed by the absence of football, you can begin by stocking up on your favorite novelty team fabrics in order to keep you going. And just as Zeus had intervened on Demeter’s behalf, J&O Fabrics will help you during this crisis. Our large stock of novelty fabrics includes all of the NFL teams, often in more than one color.

The most popular of our NFL fabrics include the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. This is the NFL fabric in highest demand right now and is available in two colors: Black (nfl00024) and White (nfl00050).

Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Fabric: Black

The Philadelphia Eagles (nfl00011) and Seattle Seahawks (nfl00033) are also among our most popular prints.

Both Tennessee Titans novelty prints are among the nicest of all the NFL fabrics. The fisrt fabric is Navy (nfl00026) and the second is Sky Blue (nfl00097).

The variety of our NFL prints is surpassed by their versatility. Garments such as shirts, shorts and Hawaiian shirts will show off your favorite team. Lampshades, bed sheets, pillows, wall hangings, blankets and other decorative items will add a novel touch to your home. These are just a fraction of the uses you can give our NFL novelty fabrics!

Even when the NFL is dormant there is no need to despair -Demeter-like- at the prospect of life without football. Simply log onto jandofabrics.com and get enough of your favorite team's fabric to hold you over until the next season begins.*#
