Is Wal-Mart Going to Stop Selling Fabric?

While we are not ones for gossip, there is a rumor going around which interests us very much. Apparently, in the near future Wal-Mart is going to overhaul its fabric department, reducing the space in some stores and eliminating the department in others.

What effect will this move have on the industry? While it is still too early to tell exactly, we can estimate that it will have both positive and negative repercussions.

What are some of the possible negatives? Some of the manufacturers we purchase from count on Wal-Mart as a primary buyer of their goods. Therefore, a reduction in Wal-Mart's fabric purchasing would have a significant effect on the future of said companies. In light of Wal-Mart's decision, some of these manufacturers have already begun to experience administrative shakeups.

This decision by Wal-Mart also carries with it some benefits, however. For example, fabric retailers which may have been pushed to extinction may now have a better chance of surviving if they don't have to compete with Wal-Mart. J & O Fabrics also stands to benefit from this development, as former Wal-Mart fabric shoppers hopefully will begin to flow to our physical and online fabric stores.

Ultimately, while Wal-Mart's decisions to reduce its share of the fabric market may destabilize some companies, it represents an opportunity for growth for many others.

At J & O Fabrics we have many plans for growth on the horizon, including a substantial expansion of our dress and decorative fabric selections. We hope that you will be with us throughout the following months and years as we strive to make jandofabrics.com a peerless online fabric experience.

We look forward to your unceasing patronage as we continue to provide our extensive selection of fabrics at affordable prices. *#

The manager of the wylie texas walmart told me today they are definitely closing the fabric department and that most other walmart stores in the area are closing their fabric depts too.

Too bad they ran out the small quilt and fabric shops before they made this decision.

Shame on them!

Yes, this news is true. Do not worry as we are getting in yards and yards of new fabrics. Fabric customers will still have a place to shop with a bigger selection then Walmart ever had.

Thanks for the update.

First it was we want to cater to a higher class clientele, then it was Layaway, I had no idea I do not often use this service but now it is FABRIC and since they are the only fabric store in my area I AM OUTRAGED!!!! Middle Class and low class people made Wal-Mart what it is today, and they are definitely making decisions that will in the long run make them like Roses, Ames, and all the other long gone stores who got too big for their britches and decided their real and loyal customers don't matter. Those stores are now gone. We have been bending over and taking it from Wal-Mart, mostly due to their monopoly in most areas but I can will and now have a strong desire to put Wal-Mart last on my normal shopping routine, They use to be first(because of fabric)purchased other things also because I like to shop in one place if possible now I will go to places like Big Lots, Fred’s,Krogers or anywhere that is not WAL-MART. I am done taking it in the rear and you should be to, WE MADE THEM WE CAN BREAK THEM. "Wal-Mart brought low prices to small cities, but its creator also changed the way Big Business is run." Sam Walton would be disappointed at how they are ruining his business his dream and a system that worked to make Wal-Mart huge. Changing his dream will change Wal-Mart and I believe not for the better...

I hear complaints about Wal-Mart all the tim. They are not going to change until the CEO starts seeing smaller profits and lots of complaints from customers. The sotes in North Alabama are down sizing or eliminating the fabric departments and have already closed the lay-a-way departments, I am also seeing fewer sales people in the stores, the only thing that will get their attention is profit loss. So start shopping at other stores and we may get back the Wal-Mart Sam Walton started.

I had heard the same rumor last Fall. I called headquarters in Arkansas and asked them to please, please, not close the fabric department. I was told "sorry, the decision has already been made." In my area, one fabric department has already closed. A new store in my area does not have a fabric area.
