The origins of the modern game of basketball can be traced back to 1891, when James Naismith inaugurated the first game at a YMCA in Massachusetts. Instead of the netted baskets that are used today, Naismith nailed peach baskets into the walls at both ends of a gymnasium and thus was born a game that in time would become a global commodity.
In 1946, the NBA was formed as the Basketball Association of America. It wouldn't be until 1949 that - after merging with the rival National Basketball League - it would become the National Basketball Association. From among all of the professional basketball leagues, the NBA would emerge in the following years as the undisputed leader of its sport.
Today, the National Basketball League consists of 30 teams and has become an international ambassador for the game of basketball.
